Schizzi di sangue bagnano il letto e sporcano il petto della donna.Questa è la scena della storia biblica di Giuditta e Oloferne. Nel libro di Giuditta, nell’Antico Testamento il re degli Assiri, Nabucodonor è impegnato in una guerra contro i Medi, popolo che abitava nella parte nordoccidentale dell’Iran. Il suo generale Oloferne conduce la guerra a occidente contro il popolo di Israele e lo costringe a sottomettersi. Il generale vince battaglia dopo battaglia, ma, arrivato a Betulia incontra Giuditta, giovane e bella vedova che ha capito il punto debole del generale.Una notte Giuditta va nella tenda di Oloferne e gli fa credere di essere dalla sua parte. Gli racconta che il suo Dio gli ha spiegato i peccato del suo popolo e per questo, come punizione, dovranno sottomettersi a Oloferne.Il generale, contento, per festeggiare organizza un banchetto con Giuditta e beve, beve, beve fino ad ubriacarsi. Quando Oloferne è sdraiato sul letto, ubriaco e mezzo addormentato, Giuditta prende una spada e lo uccide tagliandogli la testa.Gli Assiri vedendo il loro generale senza testa, si spaventano e scappano. Giuditta ha liberato il suo popolo ed è diventata un’eroina.Questa è la scena più rappresentata nell’arte.
