from Ministry of Arts Podcast · host Gart Mansfield

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Ben Wakeling (@_benwakeling_)   Ben Wakeling is a multi-disciplinary artist that really does use art to ‘give back’. Ben discovered art whilst receiving support during a secure mental health assessment. He found the art therapy being most beneficial part of the after care. Since then, Ben has gone on to create the *Hackney Wick Life Drawing classes, deliver regular art [therapy] experiences for those within NHS secure hospitals and opened the **Outsider Gallery (London’s innovative art gallery exhibiting original works from NHS trusts in Forensic, CAMHS, HMP, secure units, care settings and the excluded & beyond).   With the confidence built up during his journey, Ben has now taken the leap to present and sell his work at ***The Other Art Fair in July 2021. An Art Fair that has championed the mental health charity CALM for several years.     *For more information on the Hackney Wick Life Drawing classes go to: https://www.instagram.com/hwlifedrawing/?hl=en   **For more information on the work of Outsider Gallery go to https://www.instagram.com/outsidergallerylondon/?hl=en   ***The Other Art Fair, presented by Saatchi Art is the UK’s leading artist-led fair and we are so excited to be returning to in-person events this July.
