Silent Running (1972) is a sci-fi classic with a strong environmental message. The Earth is no longer viable for plant life, the forests have been put into domes on giant space crafts in the hopes of one day bringing them back to Earth. But with corporate interference the project is scraped and the ships are ordered to destroy the domes returning the space crafts to commercial service. One man (Bruce Dern) takes it upon himself to protect the last forests of Earth.
