EP 13: Harmony in Every Key with Joe Hunter

Dive into a world of jazz that's more than just music—it's a narrative. In this enriching episode of the Jazz Flyte Podcast, host Darrell engages with the man of jazz himself, Joe Hunter, whose fingertips have danced on piano keys from Cleveland Heights to global stages. Starting at the profound age of eight, Joe's life has been a testament to the power of passion and early exposure to jazz greatness. Immerse yourself in the anecdotes as Joe transports you to the rhythmic heart of Rio de Janeiro, sharing his passion for Brazilian beats and his journey at Tri-C, flavored with nostalgic interactions with the legendary Tommy LiPuma. Now in the melody of retirement, Joe reflects on the giants who shaped his musical voyage — Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington — and how they orchestrated his career's symphony. In a crescendo of insight, the Tri-C JazzFest Legend unpacks the nuanced dynamics between electric and acoustic pianos, emphasizing the transcendence of feeling the music "under your fingers." It's an art, a science, and a language all its own.But the music doesn't stop there. Joe underscores the importance of knowing your audience, articulating the intimate energy exchange in clubs versus the sprawling resonance of concert venues. For him, the essence of music lies in its ability to connect, energize, and speak to the soul beyond technical perfection.
