Ep. 13 - The Relationship Code - The Mosses
from Wilsonkey Leadership Relationship Code Podcast With Bishop Wilson · host The Relationship Code
You can look good in a picture and still need work in your marriage. That’s why this conversation with the Mosses matters. I sat down with them on The Relationship Code to talk about “Marriage Requires Maintenance: What They Didn’t Tell You About Relationships.” And let me tell you, we went beyond wedding pictures, anniversary posts, and how they met. We talked about what it takes to keep choosing each other when life changes and the people in the marriage change, too. Together for 35 years and married for 31, the Mosses brought honesty, humor, and some hard truths to this interview. They spoke openly about expectations, emotional needs, parenting, ministry, intimacy, and learning how to become better partners. One thing that stood out was their willingness to acknowledge their own part in the disconnect. He talked about giving time and attention to ministry while neglecting what his wife and family needed. She talked about pouring herself into their children and learning to recognize that her husband needed attention, too. That takes courage. It takes maturity to stop pointing across the room long enough to examine what you’re bringing into it. We also talked about something couples need to hear: living in the same house does not automatically mean you’re connected. You still have to make time. Ask questions. Go on dates. Listen to what your partner is feeling instead of assuming you already know. The person you married years ago has grown, changed, and lived through experiences that deserve your attention today. And then we got into emotional safety. Can your partner tell you something difficult without your reaction making the conversation harder? Can they talk about changes in their body, their needs, or their fears without feeling embarrassed or small? The Mosses shared how writing to each other in a journal helped them communicate when face-to-face conversations were difficult. As they grew, they became better able to have those hard conversations together. Sometimes maintenance means finding a different way to communicate while you’re learning a healthier one. They also spoke about cutting through the noise and choosing their relationship. Making room for each other. Unlearning expectations inherited from their parents. Figuring out what actually worked for the two people living this marriage. I appreciated their honesty about seasons when they loved each other but didn’t particularly like each other. They were willing to talk about the adjustments behind the pictures. This interview gives couples plenty to discuss, and it gives singles something meaningful to consider before making a lifelong commitment. We also addressed seeking help, being willing to change, and understanding that you cannot do another person’s work for them. Watch this conversation with the Mosses, share it with someone, and talk about what stood out to you. What needs attention in your relationship right now? Give that question an honest answer. Then make time for the conversation you’ve been avoiding. Your connection deserves more than whatever energy happens to be left over at the end of the day. — Coach Wilson This is a public episode.
