Starlight Thursdays Episode 132 featuring BK Love with a Burning Man inspired mix. When people ask me “What’s Burning Man?” … like many others Burners I answer similarly….. first off 2022 was my first burn. I’ve been asking the same questions many others who haven’t been, ask. It’s a tough question to answer. It’s like asking “what’s New York City?” Like any other place you just have to experience it for yourself. Some of those experiences are predictable. I was warned not to make a bunch of plans, they wouldn’t happen, so what’s the point? I made a few plans nonetheless. One of which was to DJ a set at the camp I was staying at FunkyTown. Also to record that set and share it here. It was around 11am Wednesday when I woke to the sound of my alarm. I popped out the van grabbing my toothbrush along the way. As I brushed my teeth I took a walk through camp to catch up on what the vibe was. Full on dust storm. Wind was blowing shade sails up and down as clouds of dust whited out everything once seen on the outskirts of camp. Our sound system was bumping nonetheless. A few with true grit we’re enjoying the beat and dramatic atmosphere. I plugged in hit record and embraced the chaos. One of my friends GRUV42 appeared out of the dust to catch my set. It’s hard to express the gratitude I experienced. As a DJ it’s hard not to fantasize about what your next set is going to be like. Especially your first set at burning man. The last thing you want is ferocious weather. Embrace the chaos. My selection and mixing slowly became one with my surroundings as I lost myself in the music. The recording embraced the chaos as well. It recorded through a mic instead of through the system and came out very hollow and distant sounding. So I pulled up the tracks from that set and recorded a mix in the studio. This recorded instantly takes me back to the dust to a moment I got to share with amazing friends and wild weather.
