Ep. 135 Trusting Your Gut with Martha Alejandro-Bird

from Mission CTRL · host Peralta Design

Martha Alejandro-Bird (the original “Marty Bird”) joins Ramon and the PD Flight Crew on this episode of MissionCTRL to share her journey from the inner-city pitfalls to becoming a Naval Officer. Alejandro-Bird is now an Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Martha began following her gut instincts as a student at Bridgeport’s Bassick High School. The "brain in her gut" led her to connect with mentors who were instrumental in changing the trajectory of her life. When her gut prompted her to join the Navy, it wasn’t because she was looking for assistance with college tuition, she was simply driven to serve. Tune in to hear how Martha tapped into the enteric nervous system (ENS), also known as the “brain in your gut” or “second brain,” to pursue a career in Adult-Gerontology. As a recent graduate of the Duke University School of Nursing MSN program, coupled with 30 years of nursing experience, she has developed expert clinical, communication, and critical thinking skills. Her experience ranges from step-down trauma, critical care, and outpatient specialty to military service and supervision, demonstrating the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and flexibility.  Before launching into Martha’s story, Ramon and the PD Flight Crew cover the Knicks' playoff run, the fundamentals of website domain renewals, and web hosting services. Marty’s journey is sure to inspire!

Wounded Warriors of the Cross Gary Pastoral and clergy mental health is a mostly ignored area, especially by those who live their lives as pastors in the clergy. The stigma of mental health within those who serve in the shadow of the cross is something that invokes the stigma of fear. Many of those in the clergy will choose to suffer in their despair rather than reaching out for help. Sometimes those suffering choose to wait until it's too late to get the real help that they need. At Wounded Warriors of the Cross our mission is to lift the stigma and the veil of silence that encompasses clergy mental health and assist those who suffer in silence. Wounded Warriors of the Cross is here to shed the light of Christ's love into those dark places.
