EP 136 "Why Japan Is The Land Of Opportunities?"

from Breakfast With Tiffany Show · host Tiffany Rossdale / Hamish Downie

Send us Fan MailFor this episode we have the accomplished filmmaker, Hamish Downie from Australia who is currently living in Japan for over 16 years. He joined us to share their creative journey, their opinions as a gay man in Japan and their future dreams.  We begin with Hamish discussing how he got to Japan as he lived between Tokyo and Osaka. Then we continue to talk about the challenges in the Japanese mainstream film culture scene and LGBTQ+ genre which leads to Hamish introducing his film “Matcha & Vanilla''. A film highlighting the struggles and love of a lesbian couple in Japan, including the topics around classism, ageism and LGBTQ+ rights. He hopes that this kind of film can be enjoyed by Japanese audiences, as a way to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ stories, towards understanding and acceptance. Moreover, the discussion touched upon the importance of allies, media representation as a gay man, a daring drag experience, the continuous coming out stories, dream celebrity collaborations, and lastly ends with what they want to stand for, what they are grateful for and their favorite song. We hope you find time to check out his amazing films and reach out into his ongoing youtube channel and creative works. Hamish Downie is an Australian filmmaker based in Japan. Notable work includes the music video for Robyn Loau's single "Never Let You Down", and the multi-award winning short film, "An American Piano", which he wrote and produced, and was officially selected to screen at the TIFF Kids 2015 Festival. His debut feature film, "Matcha & Vanilla" starring Qyoko Kudo and Tomoko Hayakawa, is now streaming on Gagaoolala. And his first animated short film, "The Last Anomaly" is playing the festival circuit now. Also, every Friday, he posts a column on Japan called News Sushi, and interviews with creatives from all over the world (called 5 Questions With) on Arizona-based website "Two Gay Geeks", and has recently gotten some attention for his deep dives into Hollywood Golden Age stars on YouTube.
