Patrick Matisi was a combat engineer tasked with conducting route clearance in the highly volatile Afghanistan villages of Marjah and Sangin during Operation Enduring Freedom. During Matisi's 2011 deployment, he was shot in the shoulder by an enemy marksman in Sangin.
