When I was a kid (maybe 9 or 10), there was a band that played jazz standards at the beach near my house. This was a group of older people (maybe in their 40s or 50s but they seemed really old at the time) that just really enjoyed playing jazz. They let me stand in as their drummer on occasion and it fueled my love of rhythm and improvisation. I never became a drummer because I just loved melodic things a bit too much, but that drummer will always be a part of me.
