Borden’s diverse artistic and musical interests have led her to record and perform with a variety of bands and individual artists. For eight years she toured and recorded with Alive! – the all women jazz quintet. Then, onto a ten-year run of her highly acclaimed solo piece – She Dares to Drum, a percussion play. And two original recordings…All Hearts Beating and Beauty in the Beat, her premiere solo recording.Barbara loves sharing the benefits of drumming with others, teaching drumkit, West African djembe and ceremonial drumming to groups and individuals. For fifteen years she taught the art of drumming to the elders at the Redwoods Retirement Community in Mill Valley, CA, each participant leaving the hour-long sessions happier than when they arrived.Currently, Borden is the subject of the documentary, BARBARA BORDEN: KEEPER OF THE BEAT – A Woman’s Journey into the Heart of Drumming by Emmy-award winning filmmaker David L. Brown. She is also performing World on Fire, a poetry, theatre, music piece about climate disruption with Naomi Newman, Actress (A Traveling Jewish Theatre) and Susanne DiVincenzo, Bass & Cello (Alive!).Barbara has traveled the globe practicing drumbeat diplomacy. Performing in the former Yugoslavia during civil war in 1994, Barbara brought comfort and joy to refugees through the universal language of the drum. In Zimbabwe (Africa), Barbara drummed in airports, market places and healing rituals led by the African healer, Mandaza Kandemwa. In Siberia, Borden was initiated more deeply into the healing ways of the shamans by Tatiana Kobezhikova.Barbara is dedicated to keeping the heartbeat of joy, compassion, and creativity alive.
