EP 152 Unveiling Rainbow Resilience: Tokyo Pride March 2023 With Vivienne Lovecraft (PART 1)

from Breakfast With Tiffany Show · host Tiffany Rossdale / Vivienne Lovecraft

Send us Fan MailGuten Morgen & Happy Pride Month everyone! For this episode, we have the wonderful Vivienne Lovecraft from Germany who is a non-binary, Filipino Drag Queen and is an activist for the LGBTIQ community. This is PART one of a two-part piece. This is the second time Tiffany is celebrating pride with Vivienne, as their first time was in Japan. Vivienne shares their background story, from living with a single mother in the Philippines for 5 years before moving to Germany. After the Berlin Wall fell, the country had a loose immigration law, an incentive to bring more people from around the world in. This is where Vivienne and their mum moved to a rural area in 1994. Growing up with mixed cultures, Vivienne explains the struggles of living in a community with not many Asians and the racism they faced. However, they also appreciate having two cultures where they have learned to adapt and have a unique perspective of the world. Vivienne reflects back on their childhood memories and acknowledges the good and bad that came along with it.  They point out that recognizing our traumas is part of the healing process, as we try to protect the inner child in us to not get hurt again, yet we should not forget our older self, and offer ourselves the chance to live in the present moment. Vivienne shares that their healing process has been one of openness to communication and emotional connection through their art and drag. They mention the power they get from narrating their past trauma through art while being vulnerable which can resonate with others. Even though emotions are sometimes viewed as a weakness, Vivienne thinks otherwise. The discussion delves into Vivienne’s 17-year relationship and what they think is the key to a last longing relationship, the keywords around “transparency” and “communication”. We later learn how Vivienne ended up in the pride event in Japan last year and their views on the LGBTQIA+ rights conversation in Japan from marriage rights to the unfortunate lack of recognition as a whole. Tune in next week to learn what Vivienne's experience as a drag artist is like! ~~~Vivienne Lovecraft is a non-binary, Filipino Drag Queen who grew up in Germany. She grew up in the northern part of Germany, close to a small town called Bremen, and worked there in an LGBTIQ-youth group until she moved to Berlin.
