Ep. 159: '90s Beauty Moments - Sade Adu and the original 'clean girl' aesthetic

from The Charisse Report · host Charisse Kenion

If you're up on your social media trends, then you'll be familiar with the less-is-more vibe of the 'clean girl aesthetic' trend, but for many black and brown women, it's simply a more natural, pared-down approach to beauty that they have been enjoying for decades. Despite many a content creator labelling the likes of Bella Hadid and Hailey Beiber as the originators of the 'clean girl' trend, for me, the original clean girl has to be Sade, lead singer of her eponymous band. Folasade Adu is a Nigerian-born British singer known for her velvety tones and clean beauty aesthetic - think red lip, hair in a bun and a pair of gold hoop earrings. In this episode I discuss the look and also touch on the concept of black beauty creators not always being given credit for starting new trends, in fashion, beauty or social media. There is also a video to really show you what I'm talking about, which you can find on the @beautymepodcast Instagram or on my TikTok @charissekenion. In fact for each of these 25 '90s Beauty Moments podcasts there's a matching video!
