Ep. 166: The Well to Hell

from The Tales We Tell

In 1989, they say a demon broke the fiery bonds of Hell and escaped through a hole foolishly dug by mortal humans trying to reach the center of the earth; that demon would flit about restlessly until it finally came to rest inside the tiny infant body that would become your favorite podcast cohost: Katy. That story might not have made the rounds on the internet in the 90's, but a similar one did: Russian geologists, in their bid to reach the earth's mantle (and gain the title of "world's deepest hole") inadvertently broke through into a mysterious cavern, nine miles below the surface of the earth, and to their horror, heard the screams of thousands of damned souls burning in a lake of fire. This week, the girls will discuss what's fact and what's fiction in this spooky legend, and as always, leave you with some solid facts that might scare you almost as much as the prospect of Hell bubbling just nine miles under our feet. Be prepared for childhood religious trauma, geology facts, and lots and lots of jokes about "deep holes" because apparently this podcast is run by 13 year-old boys. Get the sunglasses and the Holy Water, and strap in for a deep dive (get it?) into this tale of Local Lore!Sources: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-deep-is-the-deepest-hole-in-the-world/https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/kola-superdeep-boreholehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kola_Superdeep_Borehole#Researchhttps://skeptoid.com/episodes/4307https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/news/apr17/dwh-protected-species.html#:~:text=Marine%20mammal%20researchers%20concluded%20that,in%20the%20Gulf%20of%20Mexico.https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-lasting-impact-of-deepwater-horizon/https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-well-to-hell/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/giant-hole-ground-has-been-fire-more-40-years-180951247/https://worldcrunch.com/what-the-world/eternal-flame-fallshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_GurgurSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!
