Ep 18: Laneway Talks with Vince & Rob

Vince and Rob discuss the music industry, focusing on the challenges faced by artists and venues. Robert shares his experience with a Facebook post about his band's song "Free Me," highlighting the positive response to the lead singer, Diane Dixon. They discuss the cost of living crisis and its impact on venues, with Queensland's Nighttime Commissioner as a potential solution. Vincent criticizes government funding for such positions. They also talk about the inequities in streaming platforms like Spotify and introduce Laneway Red, a new platform aimed at providing transparency and better support for artists, with a 74.76% revenue share for artists. Vincent and Rob decided to chat away one day about the music business in their territory and from that discussion came the idea to create a podcast about our knowledge base. Vincent from the business side of things and Rob from the education side. Vincent has a 35 year history in entertainment, and Rob has just completed his Phd in Music at the University of Adelaide. Those backgrounds will bring about some real differences in what they interpret the music business is and how it operates. Join the guys for an hour of insights into the business.
