WHY ISRAEL IS CENTRAL TO JUDAISM: THE JEWISH ROOTS OF ZIONISM
from Echoes of Jewish History · host Jimmy Bitton
WHY ISRAEL IS CENTRAL TO JUDAISM: THE JEWISH ROOTS OF ZIONISMCan Judaism be separated from Israel? In this episode of Echoes of Jewish History, historian Jimmy Bitton examines the relationship between Judaism, Zionism and the Land of Israel. Drawing on the Hebrew Bible, Talmud, Jewish prayer and modern Jewish history, he explains why the longing for Zion is not a recent political invention, but a recurring structure of Jewish faith, memory and peoplehood. The episode begins with the biblical covenant associated with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the place of Eretz Yisrael in Genesis, Exodus and Deuteronomy. It then considers the visions of exile and return found in Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, together with the enduring presence of Jerusalem and Zion in the Amidah, Birkat Hamazon and Jewish liturgy.Jimmy explores how Jewish thinkers including Judah Halevi, Maimonides and Nahmanides understood the relationship between the Jewish people and their ancestral homeland. He then traces the development of modern Zionism through Rabbis Judah Alkalai and Zvi Hirsch Kalischer, Leon Pinsker and Theodor Herzl.Modern Zionism did not invent the Jewish connection to Israel. It translated an ancient religious and historical attachment into a modern movement for Jewish national restoration and self-determination. The episode examines how antisemitism, persecution and the Holocaust intensified that movement, while also distinguishing the ancient Jewish longing for Zion from the political forms Zionism assumed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The discussion concludes by examining anti-Zionism and antisemitism today. When criticism of Israeli policy becomes a denial of Jewish history, Jewish peoplehood or the Jewish right to self-determination, it reaches far beyond ordinary political disagreement.Topics include biblical Zionism, Jewish identity, the Land of Israel, Jerusalem in Jewish prayer, exile and return, religious Zionism, secular Zionism, Theodor Herzl, Jewish self-determination, antisemitism, anti-Zionism and the history of the State of Israel.Listen to Echoes of Jewish History for serious, evidence-based analysis of Jewish history, Israel, Zionism, antisemitism and the ideas shaping the Jewish world.PARTNER — NQ COACHINGNQ Coaching provides neuroscience-based programs for leaders and organizations seeking stronger resilience, better performance and long-term well-being.Mention Echoes of Jewish History and receive 20% off any corporate program or individual coaching package.Learn more: https://www.nqcoaching.com Email: [email protected] Echoes Media: https://jimmybitton.com— Affiliate Links:Jimmy’s favorite pillow “Beckham Hotel Collection Bed Pillows” Get it here on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4cFl0XnJimmy’s favorite tech stack “Beats Studio Pro with AppleCare+” Get it here on Amazon: https://amzn.to/48bwRLi“Shure SM7dB Microphone” Get it here on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4cTSxy5Partnership Opportunities:Follow me here for weekly insights, or listen to Echoes of Jewish History on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.Explore: https://jimmybitton.com Partner: [email protected] partner of Leket Israel
