WHY ISRAEL IS CENTRAL TO JUDAISM: THE JEWISH ROOTS OF ZIONISMCan Judaism be separated from Israel? It then considers the visions of exile and return found in Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, together with the enduring presence of Jerusalem and Zion in the Amidah, Birkat Hamazon and Jewish liturgy.Jimmy explores how Jewish thinkers including Judah Halevi, Maimonides and Nahmanides understood the relationship between the Jewish people and their ancestral homeland. He then traces the development of modern Zionism through Rabbis Judah Alkalai and Zvi Hirsch Kalischer, Leon Pinsker and Theodor Herzl.Modern Zionism did not invent the Jewish connection to Israel. It translated an ancient religious and historical attachment into a modern movement for Jewish national restoration and self-determination. The episode examines how antisemitism, persecution and the Holocaust intensified that movement, while also distinguishing the ancient Jewish longing for Zion from the political forms Zionism assumed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.The discussion concludes by examining anti-Zionism and antisemitism today.
