Before Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin—a 15-year-old girl who refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, NINE months before the Montgomery Bus Boycott began.When asked why she didn’t move, Claudette said, “It felt as though Harriet Tubman’s hand was pushing me down on one shoulder and Sojourner Truth’s hand on the other.”Claudette’s bravery didn’t end with her arrest—she became one of the plaintiffs in the court case Browder v. Gayle, which led to the Supreme Court striking down bus segregation in Montgomery. Yet, her story was often overlooked because she was young, dark-skinned, and pregnant—seen as too ‘controversial’ for the movement’s image at the time.But today, we honor Claudette Colvin for her courage, resilience, and refusal to accept injustice.
