Ep #190 Parenthood with Simon Dunn from setisoppO podcast and Iszi Lawrence from Terrible Lizards, The British Museum Membercast.

from Flixwatcher: A Netflix Film Review Podcast · host Stripped Media

Simon Dunn (setisoppO podcast) and Iszi Lawrence (Terrible Lizards, The British Museum Member cast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Simon’s choice Parenthood. Parenthood is a 1989 Ron Howard comedy ensemble film starring Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Rick Moranis, Martha Plimpton, Keanu Reeves, Dianne Wiest, Jason Robards, Tom Hulce, and Joaquin Phoenix (in one of his earliest roles as Leaf). Martin plays Gill who is having a family crisis as his eldest son is having emotional problems and his wife Karen (Steenburgen) is expecting their fourth child. His older divorced sister Helen (Wiest) is having her own family problems with her children. Her younger son Garry (Phoenix) is withdrawn and secretive and her older daughter Julie (Plimpton) is dating Tod, presumed no good but turns out to be a dude while dealing with loneliness and lack of sex life. Their younger sister Susan is married to Nathan (Moranis) and is neglected as he is more interested in spending time with his precocious daughter. If that wasn’t enough life drama their younger brother Larry (Hulce) returns with gambling problems and his secret biracial son. Parenthood mixes some feel-good moments with some surprisingly bleak visions of parenthood. No film about parenthood would be with sentimentality and it just about gets away with it because it's actually genuinely funny. Iszi hated it, whereas Simon, Kobi, and Helen all enjoyed it - both as a nostalgia watch and as a good Steve Martin film. We did all agree that it should have ended on the ‘life is rollercoaster’ metaphor rather than the maternity ward end.     Scores  [supsystic-tables id=199] Despite Iszi not enjoying anything about it Parenthood still manages to score a very respectable 3.95 overall.   What do you guys think?
