I remember September 11th. I remember my birthday, my favorite birthday was 2021 and the heart face emoji came out. Yeah, like around that time, more emojis started came out and that was one of them. Hello and welcome to WNC Original Music Episode 190, the Australian permanent residency episode.
This week we have Sarah and Chad from the wonderful band of love for faces. That is a husband and wife duo, Sarah and Chad. Are there Andy Rock, Alt Band, Andy Rock, Alt Band, Andy Alt Rock Band with a lot of local harmonies, two lead singers and occasionally a full band, quartet, quintet, nuff-tet in the future. The love of faces may seriously be the busiest band I've ever seen, especially for a local band.
I've seen them play three to five shows a week, couple of shows a day. So look them up, you can find them on theloverfaces.com. Here are Chad and Sarah, the love of faces. I wanted to write a song about, you know how there's Blackbird and Wings has the bluebird.
I wanted to write a song about it. Freebird, I've heard it one of the words on. Let's name four more birds. Four more birds songs.
I'm sure there's another song on the song. I wanted to write a song about one of those birds. Fly, Rub and Fly. There you go.
I wanted to write a song about one of those birds that's like aging, like about, that it's kind of on its last leg, but it's still able to sing and fly and stuff. Even though I kind of also wrote it like about my dad too, because my dad was going through health problems. He's not a bird though. Yeah, he's not a bird, but he's doing good now.
Yeah. It's one of the songs that Sarah likes a lot. Yeah. So she was like, we gotta play it, which usually happens with all the songs that I write, that I write, that we play, or songs that probably songs that I've written before that Sarah likes.
And she's like, can we play this one? Pretty much. Who are the lover faces? We are a husband and wife duo.
I'm Sarah. And I'm Chad. Where does the name lover faces come from? Is this a, can this be an R rated?
Sure. Oh yeah. Yeah. Okay.
He's what I want to do. So when we, so we're married, we first got together in 2008, summer of 2008, and around that time I was listening to a lot of Montreal and one of Montreal's new albums came out and there was this one line. It's old now. That was like 16 years.
Yeah. Forgive what album it was. But it was. No, it was after that.
Oh. There's this one line that says like, love or face gonna make you ejaculate till it's no longer fun. So then we had like our nickname for each other was love or face for a long time. So it could have been ejaculate.
I mean, just being named ejaculate. But it's not. Well, also it was right around the time when like the heart face emoji came out too. And like love or face.
It was just something that we would say. Like in your mind, there's a like point of time that you remember when the heart face emoji came out. It was. It was.
Like was that a notable. Yeah. I remember. I remember September 11th.
I remember my birthday my favorite birthday was 2021 and when the heart face emoji came out. But yeah, like around that time more emojis started came out. That was one of them. I was like, it's a lover face.
So yeah. And we as we had kind of like we're making rap songs for fun. This was like 17 years. And we're like, oh, we need a name.
We need a band. So it was just called love or faces. And then then we stopped making rap songs. We kind of made one or two here and there.
You had to because I think somebody hung you off about any and your by your feet or something. Yeah. So like, what rap song or what? Top you.
Yeah. Well, we're stopped doing more. Yeah. They were they were intimidated.
Yeah. Yeah. I can't remember the story about the guy. I don't know the story.
It's like rap culture that maybe was vanilla ice, vanilla ice rap in parentheses. That was my first concert. That oh really? I was in third grade.
We're talking about that later. Third grade. Yeah. Did you come to your elementary school?
Was it always like slide down? My parents took me for like it was like a Christmas gift. And she threw it up. Oh yeah.
That's when we discovered I whenever I'm in loud things like I absorb the vibrations. Like I feel it in my teeth and everywhere. I'm sure it was the biggest. Oh, anyway.
Yeah. I'm making the noise it doesn't bother me. Some like rap on Emperor Sario hung vanilla ice off of a ledge. Oh, I didn't know that.
Yeah. So that was going back. That's why I said that I regret it now. Because I thought you were talking about Michael Jackson.
Because I was holding like his baby. All right. That could be too. Yeah.
I remember that. Yeah. Blanket. Everybody remember that from the styles park.
That's the only reason why. Oh yeah. That's where I get my new. How many times have sweet water called you guys?
They call you guys? Oh yeah. I have a right. You're about anything.
Yeah. What? You only know this if you buy stuff from Sweetwater. What do you guys buy your clothes?
Or get your clothes? So this sure actually has a story. Okay. This came from the old drummer of Panther Town, Val, who was a roadie back in the day.
No, he wasn't a roadie. Or not a roadie. He worked on one of Lenny Cravitz's farms. So this shirt used to be long Lenny Cravitz.
And my mom. How many farms does Lenny Cravitz have? I think only one. He altered it.
But that one. Fit Chad. So it used to be like as long as a nightgown. And now it's like, but I stole it.
No. Lenny's a larger man than me. Right. He's much taller than me.
But it did get when it got altered. It was a little T small. Oh, okay. So he has one that shirt.
Yeah. I don't know. Probably. Well, that's the story I'm just talking about.
I mean, it was in his closet. Let's ring it out. Let's see if we can get a little sweat out of it. I say that's where I get my talent from.
Oh, okay. Suddenly I'm good at bass. Lenny Cravitz's shirt. Yeah.
It's from Lenny Cravitz's shirt. Yeah, I'm pretty basic. I like Target. I like going to the outlets and walking around.
The dealers' outlet. Sometimes that's some good stuff. Now here's a fascinating thing about me. People disagree with me that it's fascinating.
But I don't like to wear clothes into a store where I bought the clothes. Like about like a this came from old Navy these pants. Yeah. I would never wear them into old Navy.
Yeah. Am I allowed to wear this shirt? I can't show. I don't want them to think that I need them.
Or that you stole it. Yeah. They're like, oh, I love these pants so much. I came back for sweater.
No, I'm not having people think that about me. Absolutely not. I am not going to do that. So you have anything like that.
And you're like, don't have to be close related. My brother hates when people back in the parking spots. I think that's a fairly common pull through. If he sees somebody pull through, the day is ruined.
I like to pull through. We're pulling through the other spot. Hey, we had like seven people watching our live and then I'll have them slowly left. Let's try to take care of the clothes.
I guess. Yeah. This would be a good research for the podcast. Yeah.
It's like, what should we talk about? It's like, is it actually a search where you get your clothes? Right down there's like old Navy. Yeah.
I like mockingbird because it has like a harder baseline in it than the basis. Yeah. So I was like, singing for a quick. Just the baseline.
Knocking. Ah, the bockem. Bockem. Bockem.
Bockem. Bockem. Bockem. Bockem.
Now we got our ones. Bockem. Bockem. Bockem.
That was very good. Thanks. So show me how you ease your mind. Show me how you ease your mind.
So that was a song that I was kind of playing like this like slow jam. R&B. R&B-ish type song. Soul retro.
Like very, like very rarely. I just kind of played chords like that and I was like singing something. And yeah, Sarah really liked that one. So she was like, we should play that one.
It was a different style than what we were. I mean we were playing kind of a bunch of different styles of music but it was mostly like we're kind of exploring like the 90s alternative. We do a lot of 90s covers. But with like a folk acoustic sound too.
Yeah. But that was one of the songs that was like a different, I felt like a different genre altogether. But then we just decided we're just going to play any kind of genre. I was like, we need this freaking song.
It's awesome. I can sing a song. Yeah, exactly. We need the song.
It's awesome. And what is easy mind about? Oh yeah. Oh yeah, I should say what it's about.
You don't have to. If it's too personal. No, it will. So it's kind of about like how me and Sarah kind of have different ways of thinking.
I'm a little more type A. He's a lot more type A. I let like news and stuff bother me a little more. Like what the world bother me.
But Sarah's always been like. Rough few years where you like it. Yeah. Yeah.
Sarah's always been like super laid back. She doesn't care about news. She doesn't she cares about. I think what's important you can speak to it.
Well, it's not that I don't care about what's going on in the world. I just know that peace is one of my highest priorities. And if I'm paying attention to everything out there, then it's not going to be peaceful in here. Yeah, I mean, it's kind of always feels like a waste of time to like what can you really do.
Yeah. Because it's individual. So like, yeah, there's stuff you can do. But watching a list of disasters every day, I feel like doesn't help.
Yeah. So the one line in the song is like the the hook in the course is like, show me how you ease your mind. So it's just kind of me like. And Sarah's kind of she's helped me over the years.
Kind of get into a better headspace. What techniques are you using into a better headspace? I just play base and like screw whatever's happening in there. Oh, what have you shown Chad?
Oh, yeah. What do you think I've shown you? I mean, she points out if I'm looking at my phone too much and stuff like that. And then like the past couple of years, like I just like every September, I've been doing like a completely no internet.
Except for work. Yeah, except for work. But I try to pick like, yes, September. I feel like it's like one of the best months to like be outside.
So I just don't use my phone at all. Book on the internet. I don't know what's going on in the world. And then at the end of the month, I'm like, oh, I wonder what happened.
And it's usually like. And you find it all at once. And then you're like, oh my god. Well, you think that you come at the end of the month and you think that there's going to be all this stuff that you missed.
But there's really not that much that you missed. Yes, sir. Yeah, because a lot of stuff like like there's some things that happened this week probably that two weeks from now, everyone's forgotten. It doesn't matter.
Yeah. When it's happening in the moment, it feels so much bigger than it actually is. So I want you to separately think of your genre and write them down and then we'll compare them. Where things, yeah.
That kind of like lead to each other. Sarah, what do you want to tell us about your other creative endeavors? There's not really many right now besides writing songs. Oh, really?
Yeah. Do you want me to bring up things that I know you do or have done? Oh, you can. If you want.
I don't you read tarot cards? Oh, yeah, I do. But that's like my job. I mean, you can talk about it.
I didn't think of that as creative, but I guess it is. Yeah. She's got how many five-star reviews? Like hundreds.
I sell my readings on Etsy and I started that during the pandemic because I was at the time I was a pen sitter and face painter and none of that was a thing anymore, which is fine. I had always wanted to work from home remotely and that's what I do now. When I'm not writing songs and managing a band and doing all that stuff. Have you ever thought about learning another similar tradition and seeing if the predictions match up?
Like runes? Yeah, the Japanese version. We use sticks. I know you're talking about the I Ching.
Yeah, the I Ching. I actually was studying that when we moved into this neighborhood. I'm not going to say. That's just us everybody again.
They don't like the I Ching. Let me write something down. But is the I Ching is that more intuitive or you just once you know the system, like anyone can do it? I think that's more like you learn the system whereas with the tarot, I kind of read it like each card has its own story on it and see how they connect and things like that.
All right. So we're looking at your genres. See if they match up. I've edited out everything we just talked about.
It'll be very smooth. Okay. You did it super fast. I said indie alternative rock.
I said acoustic 90s alternative indie. Okay. You're like four. No, I feel like 90s alternative.
90s alternative. Oh, yeah. One is genre. Oh, yeah.
Okay. What's the song that you listen to again and again and again? Somebody else's song, you mean? Yeah.
I like the slow things by Ron Taylor. That's a good one. I mean, should we play right now? I think we should.
You can insert it. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I'll do a little bit of that.
Yeah. That is a great song. I don't know if you're. I mean, it's actually by the turn leaves.
Yeah, by the turn leaves. Written by Ron Taylor. Written by Ron Taylor. So the turn leaves is for those of you watching is a band that Chad and Ron were in like years ago.
Oh, hey, actually, there's only one person watching right now. I think she knows who the turn leaves are. I know, but she's the one that are watching in the future or listening to the podcast. I'm still not grasping that.
That's what it leads to later. Was that one real? Yeah. Oh, really?
Yeah. You have a version of it? You listen to it all the time. I mean, I don't listen to it all the time now, but I really liked the song and I remember learning it when I was on the YouTube.
That's right. Yeah. Yeah. I was saying that.
What about a song like now? I think I listened to Jim Jones or an M. Jim James. watermelon cooler.
A.E. I.O. It's called New Technology. It's called New Technology by Jim James.
Oh, I never heard of you. He's a you know, my morning jacket. Yeah. He's a it's like his solo.
Oh, okay. I listen to backwards by Tame and Paula. So you listen to it a lot a lot. Chad, what about you?
I think the song that I've probably listened to the most is slow things slow thing. A second second most song that I've listened to is never meant by American football. It's like, I'm not using some sort of it. It's, you know, American football.
What about is it like I have to go home? No, no, they're on the same record label, polyvinyl. This is a it's like just got this awesome drum beat in the beginning. And it's just like kind of Matthew indie rock guitar part that just loops and it's really cool.
So I'm not favorite songs. All right. See, never meant. Never meant.
Okay. Is it and you think it's unusual that you've never heard of chance favorites? I mean, I don't always know what they're called. Right.
Oh, that's true. Yeah. I know you love them. Yeah.
What is a chance favorite and American football or a loha? I assumed it was a I'm gonna say something that I used to be Owen, right? That's my concealer from American football. So I grew them together.
Yeah. You got a whole like a you got a chart with like American football in the middle in a bunch of pieces of yarn going out to other bands and so. My one friend got kind of not pissed at me, but he was like, come on. Like he asked what my favorite band was.
And I was like, I don't really have a favorite. I like the whole equally. They're all my babies. Don't.
I don't. I don't. I was going to say that. Why are we even everybody knows that.
Yeah. I think your middle name is my favorite band is David Bowie. Sarah even we've named both of our dogs after. Yeah.
Oh, we came with Rebel. Rebel Rebel. I thought Rebel was named after Rebel Wilson. That's what everyone said.
Oh, yeah. Who is also? I'm going to insert me saying something more recently. We were more from Sarah and Chad of the Lover Faces in just a few moments.
I want to remind you that you can find their music and announcements and put the shows from them at theloverfaces.com. Theloverfaces.com. Also, I forgot to mention the other members of the band. So in addition to Chad, Jordan and Sarah Jordan, there is Kevin Ludlow, who's their guitarist and Jeff Vandal, who is a multi-instrumentalist.
Doesn't say what the multi-instrumentals are. I'm assuming cello piccolo, that's her thing. Corrections and clarification this week from last week's episode with Sycamore Bones. Happy Gilmore was a sequel to the original Happy Gilmore movie with Adam Sandler that came out last year. And Happy Fillmore was an adult movie that also came out last year. So we were both right.
Hi, this is Sally with Black Tore Roses and you're listening to WNC Original Music. So I was writing Secret Ghost and I think this was, yeah, actually Ron, you helped me come up with the chorus goes, GC and you're like, what about GCB? I was writing it when the turn leaves were, you came over to practice. I'm serious.
I was writing it like, anyway, the song is... I was when the turn leaves were... The turn leaves were still together. I wrote it on the ukulele back in 2018 or 2017.
Okay. And it was one of the first ukulele songs that I wrote that wasn't about a dog. I was inspired by Stranger Things. There's a scene where Winota Ryder's character is talking to her son through the lights in the wall, like a Ouija board because Willa's disappeared.
And I thought, wouldn't it be cool to write a song like to a ghost or someone that's not there? And I was also heavily influenced by Beetlejuice. So the song used to be called Beetlejuice. Weren't you also influenced or like it came to you like when I walked into it?
So yeah, we used to have a walk-in closet in the old house we lived in. And I was interested in the closet and Chad walked in and he was not... It wasn't a closet. It was a walk-in closet.
He was doing a lot of stuff. He was not expecting me to be there and he screamed. And I was like, okay, wow, that's not the reaction I was expecting. But in a way, he was not expecting me to be there.
But it's kind of like a love song. Yeah, it's a love song about a ghost. But it was inspired by those three things. My favorite indigo girl song is named Ghost.
Oh. I mean, it's kind of like a... It could also be about Patrick Swayze. Oh yeah, it's actually about Patrick Swayze.
Oh, okay. Forget everything else I said. That's all funny meme, which said... Whenever I didn't know what ghosting was, I don't wanna see ghosts.
I thought when somebody ghosted you, they got behind you and it really sexually helped you do claymation, not claymation. I'm like, what? Pottery. The new claymation on the pottery.
They're actually making claymation. That would be awesome. He's going like this and he's going to click. Click.
Click. I wish that was like... I wish that was like... Why are all these people so mad about being ghosted?
Yeah, being ghosted is awesome. Yeah. I thought ghosted meant ghosted. You thought I meant what?
Ghosted. Ghosted. Ghosted. That's from, um...
Who's that? The movie back? Ghost hunters. Ghost.
Ghost. Busters. Yeah. That's what it means.
He's talking about busting. Yeah, I know. You know what I mean? That's the first one?
Yeah. Oh, the Enochroid is late in bed and a ghost comes above me and you see like his belt coming off and he got it. Oh, I don't remember that. It's really creepy.
I think I was too young enough. I suggest you don't watch it if you want this. I think positive things about the Enochroid anymore. My memory bank only works for like seven years.
I just remember the scary ghost in the library. Oh, that's the beginning scene. Yeah, and it's all I remember. Other than WNC original music, what are some podcasts you recommend?
Mikey's untitled music podcast, which we're going to be on in a week or so. Is that the name of it or is it not? That's what it's called. It sounds familiar.
Is it local or? Not far away. Yeah. Far away.
Chad, what do you listen to? Music podcasts or any kind of podcasts. I'm kind of like a computer nerd. Like I do software stuff.
So I like Lex Friedman. He has a lot of like AI people on. We listen to some comedians sometimes like Bill Burr. Stop Rose.
Theo Vaughn. We're going to see Don't Get Trestle who also has a podcast. Don't get Trestle. I've only heard his name.
The only thing I've ever actually. From here. Yeah. But he moved to Texas.
Yeah, he's got a really cool podcast. He's like not as much anymore, but he was like very into like Buddhism and stuff. So he has a lot of like people on his podcast to talk about meditation stuff like that. Yeah.
What's the song that you still have an emotional response to after hearing it a bunch of times? I think the entire like, Cigarose like parentheses album. Because we used to mean Sarah used to listen to that album to fall asleep too. Oh yeah, that song.
It's that whole album is just so beautiful. Yeah. And then a lot of the songs are on this. Cigarose like like video like a it's like a full length video where they did a tour.
They're from Iceland and they did a tour like surprise concerts around Iceland. So it's like each song is like a different scene. Like they might be outside on the side of a mountain. One song they're like in this little cafe.
It's just like a awesome it's on YouTube now. I think it's what's it called? Haima. Yeah, it's really cool if you want to just look at all the different sites in Iceland and listen to beautiful music.
Yeah, it's one of Iceland, right? Yeah, it was so awesome. Yeah, we want to go back. I would love to go back.
So to answer your question for me. Well, pretty soon you want to get a passport. It's really on it. I know about Iceland.
Iceland is included in it. Oh, it's next. I can't play my own song about Ziggy without crying. Oh yeah.
It's like one of my best songs. Yeah, it's one of my favorite songs. I can not play it without crying. So we haven't recorded it yet.
It's like even though like it's been like 10 years since that dog has been alive. I cannot play it without crying. Yeah. But it's one of my best songs I think.
And she was playing it for your planet for a while. And then like I thought you were going over it. But then I've been hit with a lot of other grief. Like a lot of relatives have passed between now and then.
So it's like kind of gets all mixed together. And like when I play it, I just get the grief comes out. Who are some local musicians or national if there are people you know that you recommend people listen to? Animals Street and Kid Billy.
Kid Billy. Yeah, the game right? And he's got a kid billion and then hustles. Oh, hustles souls.
Yeah, Kid Billy is from Hustles Souls. I guess Chad Jordan. That's me. Let's see.
What other local bands do I know? Oh, Dark City Kings, obviously, and Bad Authors. We're going to be opening for them again. But yeah, Dark City Kings are awesome.
They're in Black Mountain. Have they been on the podcast? They have had a closing song. Okay, cool.
Okay, I'll cast David. We have done a whole interview with yourself. Oh, also, someone guy named John. Oh, John Prophet?
Yeah. And the good local musician. He does. Corey Boer's another good local musician.
There's just so many. Everybody's good. Ron Taylor. Ron Taylor.
That sounds way. Ron the cool man. Taylor. Look at that out of course.
What is your favorite vacation spot? Hawaii. Hawaii. Yeah, we got married on the Big Island.
Sarah grew up for like six years. Five years. Five years on the Big Island. So we've been there a few times and then we went to Hawaii last year.
And loved Hawaii. Yeah. We tried to get to Mark Zuckerberg's private beach. Oh, yeah?
Yeah, we found out like the like dirt road that you had to drive down to get there. Because they have a thing in Hawaii where anybody is, you're not allowed to own a beach. Like anybody's allowed to go on a any beach. So we drove down the road, but there was a giant cliff to get down there.
Oh, yeah. And Sarah's like, I'm not walking down there. Yeah. That's technically how it is in North Carolina that but you can own up to the beach.
I think you know, to do something. So you can't own the actual beach. Yeah, so you can like approach. If you do, like you can walk the whole coast of North Carolina.
But if it's like high tide, you've got like three feet, you know, throw up in some places, you know. And then of course there's always people coming out there thinking they own the beach. Yeah. You know, so you might, there's all kinds of videos of people arguing about it.
Yeah, you can, you can feel like you own the beach. Right. State of mind. Right.
Rebel. Like Rebel. He owns any piece of. He owns it.
Yeah. Any area that he's in. Yeah. He commands it.
Yeah. Okay, big thanks to Chad and Sarah from the lever faces for being on the podcast. I am finding out just as we go to press that Redhead's Tiki Shack in Asheville. Is it Asheville?
I believe it's in Asheville. I have named a drink after the lever faces. So go in there and order a lever face. Just see what happens.
Go in a lot of places and order a lever face and see what happens. Okay. I'm doing a real time update and correction. Breadheads Tiki Shack is on 606 West Main Street in Silva.
Silva is a great town. You should go to it. I don't care where you are. If you're in Colorado, California, Bryson City even go over to Breadheads Tiki Shack on Main Street in Silva, North Carolina.
