John Buchanan was a highly successful Ashes and World Cup winning coach of the Australian men’s cricket team between 1999 and 2007. But what many people may not know is that he played two years for Cambridgeshire CCC in the late 1970s. Buchanan talks fondly of his two seasons, 1978 and 1979, playing for the Minor County side where he played alongside the West Indian Test player Derick Parry and against ex England legend John Edrich in his Norfolk CC days. Former Cambridgeshire CCC captains Alan Ponder and Nigel Gadsby, who made his debut in the then young Aussie’s second match for the county add their thoughts on Buchanan’s qualities as an all-round cricketer.
