Ep 197 - Sarah Childs - A Derby winning filly, a painting & a log cabin
from The Paddock and The Pavilion - The Horse Racing and Cricket Podcast · host Stephen Wallis
Fifinella was the last filly to win the Derby in 1916. She won the Oaks only two days later. Our main guests are Sarah Childs, the great granddaughter of Royal jockey Joe Childs, who rode Fifinella to glory, and her partner Zac Watkins. And we have an interesting story for you which covers Joe Childs, a three-time Derby winning jockey, who had classic success for King George V, a painting based on a cigarette card and a log cabin with beautiful views in Herefordshire. Joining Sarah and Zac you will hear from equine artist and the resident artist at Cheltenham racecourse Emily Johnson, who painted Fifinella and Tim Cox, a former Trustee of the National Horse Racing Museum and owner of the Cox Library. Emily talked about the challenges of painting ‘The Flying Filly’. Her painting now resides at the Fifinella retreat in Herefordshire. Meanwhile Tim gives us excellent insight about the riding career of Joe Childs, the racing career of Fifinella, and the impact of cigarette cards in Britain during the early part of the 20th century. Add a connection with Disney and Roald Dahl and you have a fascinating horse racing story.
