ABOUT THE AUTHOR: He almost didn’t get to write it. Hunter almost drowned to death at age 19. The incident transformed his life. Also at that age, he got married and remained with his wife until she died of lung cancer in 2009. Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania as one of six children, Hunter made his mark in computer sciences. He was a software architect for 21 years with Bell Labs, and served in the same capacity for 12 years at Motorola. He was a walk-on on the wrestling team at Penn State but his true passion was numbers. To stretch the dollar, he took a heavy course load and graduated in three years. Hunter then served in the Navy for two years where he worked to verify computer calculations. He modeled and programmed an airport noise that was a smashing success and was adopted for the US government. He earned a PHD in Math from Northwestern. While working as an assistant professor for three years in the mid-1970s at the University of Kentucky, he wrote six scholarly mathematics papers that are still being read today. He has lived in Washington DC and several suburban communities of Chicago. He resides in Forest Park, Illinois.
