Ep.2. Ibn Arabi’s "Fixed Entities" (aʿyan al-thabita), Ibn Arabi Podcast

from Immortal Echoes, Mortal Words · host Rasoul Rahbari-Ghazani

Rasoul Rahbari-Ghazani Music: https://www.youtube.com/@amirmohamdmonjezi Ibn ʿArabī, the enigmatic metaphysician master, introduced one of the most mind-bending theories in metaphysics: "Fixed Entities" (aʿyān al-thābita). These entities dwell eternally in God’s Knowledge, shaping beings while never crossing into existence. In this episode, we explore: What are Fixed Entities? How do they relate to God's eternal knowledge and self-disclosure (tajalli)? Their role in the Oneness of Being (wahdat al-wujūd) – Understanding Ibn ʿArabī’s view of divine unity.  The link between fixed entities and the Names. The two-step process of emanation (al-fayż al-aqdas & al-fayż al-muqadas). My questions for you: If everything in the world is a manifestation of Names, how should that change the way we treat nature, animals, and other people?  According to Ibn Arabi, each fixed entity corresponds to a Name, and thus, every being is a manifestation of Names. How does this affect the way we understand human nature and moral responsibility? How do aʿyān al-thābita challenge or align with Avicenna’s distinction between essence and existence? Can Ibn ʿArabī’s system be seen as an evolution of classical Islamic philosophy or a radical departure from it?  My latest book: Sarayān: The Real’s Permeation: Ibn ʿArabi on the Divine Presence in the Cosmos with Neoplatonic Insights (available in both digital and print formats): https://immortalechoes.org/pages/our-press Visit our Academy of Mystic Poetics and Philosophy, and check out our courses: https://immortalechoes.org/pages/courses If you enjoy the content and wish to support our work, your generosity helps us continue creating: https://immortalechoes.org/pages/donations Watch more from our Ibn Arabi Podcast: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqkz7b_183HG0qkYvbH9dyTAWnncKZGLp&si=sCNGBNjB7RRRIZat My recent publications: https://istanbul.academia.edu/RasoulRahbariGhazani   Timeline: 00:00 Intro & Definition 01:05 Overview of Fixed Entities 02:14 Fixed Entities in Relation to God and Being 03:04 The Role of Fixed Entities in the Process of Manifestation 06:54 The Implications of Fixed Entities in Ibn ʿArabī’s Unity of Existence 07:24 Philosophical and Mystical Implications 07:59 Conclusion #IbnArabi #Sufism #IslamicPhilosophy #Mysticism #WahdatAlWujud #Metaphysics #DivineKnowledge #FixedEntities #Tajalli #IslamicMysticism
