On April 10th, 1606, James I of England issued the 1606 First Virginia Charter, which created the Virginia Company, authorizing Englishmen to colonize the Americas, particularly Virginia (named in honor of both the Virgin Mary and his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth the first).It is extremely important to understand this legal charter because it influenced the thinking of the colonists.
