EP. 2: What Being a 3rd Generation Cancer Survivor Taught Me
from Sana Sana · host Eileen Lopez-Tome
Cancer affects us all differently. We are all diagnosed with different stages and different complications. When I was first diagnosed, I felt completely lost, and if I were being honest, a bit guilty.I had neglected myself in a way that my mother and grandmother didn’t. They knew to get tested and screened regularly, and they taught me to do so, too. But I got so wrapped up in taking care of everyone else that I put off a routine screening for four years. They were diagnosed at stage one, and I was diagnosed at stage three. I was devastated, but in the midst of all the feelings, I could count on my mother’s and grandmother’s cancer road map.In this week’s episode, we’re talking about what being a 3rd generation cancer survivor taught me. I learned a lot from the women who came before me. They taught me how to endure and survive in the face of adversity. But through this process, I also learned how to let go of the more detrimental habits they picked up, so that I wouldn’t harm myself and pass them on to my own children. Tune in to hear what helped me through my diagnosis and what I politely left behind as a ten-year cancer survivor.
