Reuben Sachs by Amy Levy Loyal Books Reuben Sachs is a London lawyer whose political aspirations do not include marriage to Judith Quixano, the daughter of a respectable but unexceptional family. But without Reuben, a woman like Judith might have a bleak future in mid-19th century England: a loveless marriage or lifelong dependency are apparently her only options… A feminist, a Jew, and a lesbian, Amy Levy wrote about Anglo-Jewish cultural mores and the lives of would-be independent women in Victorian society. Levy was as repelled by contemporary literature’s occasional paragon (e.g., Daniel Deronda) as by its more frequent anti-Semitic stereotypes. REUBEN SACHS was her attempt at an honest, warts-and-all account of middle class Jewish life in late-19th century London. While many of Levy’s contemporaries condemned the book as a shanda fur die goyim (an embarrassment), Oscar Wilde wrote: “Its directness, its uncompromising truths, its depth of feeling, and above all, its absence of any single superfluous word, make REUBEN Month on the Norfolk Broads, A by Walter Rye (1843 - 1929) LibriVox Back in the late 1880s, Walter Rye and a number of friends accompanied by an American couple (who were researching the history of their Norfolk ancestry), took a holiday on the Norfolk Broads and enjoyed a leisurely tour around the waterways of this unique part of Eastern England. This book documents some of the highlights of their trip on board the wherry Zöe and the hybrid wherry/cutter Lotus, as they sailed and explored many places of interest of the region. Although born in London, Walter Rye's family came from Norfolk, a county that he moved back to early in his life. He had a lifelong interest in the Broads region and was an acknowledged expert antiquarian in all aspects of Norfolk history.Interested but haven't got a whole month to spare? Well, why not jump aboard anyway and listen in for a few short hours as "the poet, the athlete, the liar and the antiquary", our American visitors and Mr Rye hoist their sails and head out to see what they can discover on Caffeinated Rambles Anh-Thu Dang Anh Thu's Americano Adventures, filled with fast-paced rambling and plenty of side tangents. Because it's time to see the world caffeinated so that we can propel ourselves forward. Medicine-Men Of The Apache, The by John Gregory Bourke (1846 - 1896) LibriVox “Herewith I have the honor to submit a paper upon the paraphernalia of the medicine-men of the Apache and other tribes. Analogues have been pointed out, wherever possible, especially in the case of the hoddentin and the izze-kloth, which have never to my knowledge previously received treatment.” (Letter of Transmittal). Bourke was a Medal of Honor awardee in the American Civil War whose subsequent Army career included several campaigns in the Indian wars of the mid to late 19th century in the American West. He wrote prolifically. He was mostly free of the unfortunate disdain for Native Americans common in 19th century America. He was quite admiring of many aspects of the Native American. “… Bourke had the opportunity to witness every facet of life in the Old West—the battles, wildlife, the internal squabbling among the military, the Indian Agency, settlers, and Native Americans.” (It is germane to note that this is a scholarly paper with many, many quotations wherein it is difficult to
