Ep. 210 - Jesus' Trap Within a Trap

The Pharisees think they’ve devised the perfect trap for Jesus: a question about paying taxes to Caesar that will land Him in trouble no matter how He answers. But with a single request for a Roman coin, Jesus turns the tables on His opponents, exposing something they never intended to reveal. What does their possession of the coin tell us and how does Jesus transform their carefully laid trap into a profound revelation about what belongs to God? This week, we’ll uncover the historical and biblical details hiding in one of the Gospel’s most familiar exchanges: “Render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.” Diving deep into Matthew’s Gospel, we’ll spend our episode looking closer at: The loaded nature of the Pharisees’ and Herodians’ question to Jesus about paying taxes—and how their alliance signals just how determined they are to bring him down [00:00:27] Why the coin Jesus asks for is so important, including the scandalous inscriptions on the imperial denarius that hail Tiberius Caesar as divine and high priest, both blasphemous claims for first-century Jews [31:01] How fiercely Jews in Jesus’s time resisted graven images and imperial symbols, from revolts over Caesar’s banners to Essenes refusing even to touch Roman coins [32:53] The brilliant rhetorical move of Jesus compelling his opponents to produce the coin, potentially exposing their own hypocrisy and impiety [35:58] The Old Testament echo in the word “likeness” (eikon), connecting Caesar’s image on the coin to humanity’s being stamped with God’s image—and what this means for how we render ourselves to God [39:09] How the story of Cyrus the Great in Isaiah 45 reveals God's power to use even pagan rulers for his purposes, reassuring us that God’s providence is never defeated, even in the messiness of personal and political dysfunction [43:40] For the full show notes including references and small group discussion questions, visit: kptz.io/29OT-A26 Join Katie's weekly newsletter and get a free audio download of her popular talk, Bible 101: A Crash Course in Scripture.
