EP 213: If it’s hysterical, it’s historical

from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns

“If it’s hysterical, it’s historical.” My dear friend, teacher, and teacher Eileen OHare, LoveMore said this to me many years ago and it has been with me ever since. It’s a profound statement that tells us that any time we feel overwhelmed by our emotions, it has much more to do with something from our past influencing our reaction to a present moment experience than it has to do with the present moment experience itself. When we practice intentionally paying attention to our experiences as they happen, we develop a skill of moment to moment, non-judging awareness. And in this skill we can respond to our present moment experiences appropriately, and without the influence of our past experiences. We can leave the hysterical in the historical. And this will help us avoid the stress response in our bodies which is almost never appropriate or necessary. For more information about the practices to which I refer, please drop a comment below or send me a DM. #stressreduction #healthyhabits #mindfulness #presence #selfawareness
