Forty years ago, long before Prop 8, the Mormon church used fear-based tactics and political pressure to block the ERA – the Equal Rights Amendment that congress passed in 1972 – which would have added the following simple language to the US Constitution: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” By 1975, 35 US States had ratified the amendment. It needed 38 to pass. Three highly populated Mormon states – Utah, Arizona, and Nevada – never ratified this amendment. Today, a small but growing group of Mormons for ERA want to do something about that.
