Ep. 218: kranky Records & The Chicago Indie Rock Scene

from Fascinating Nouns

Like all uncool grown-ups, I believe that the music of my generation was the best.  I happened to have lived my formative years in the 90’s, so it is all Gangsta Rap and Grunge Rock.  I also only listen to popular music.  I never had interest in any independent rock scene, it just wasn’t my thing.  So this week, I wanted to explore what was going on in rock right under my nose!  Bruce Adams author of ‘You’re With Stupid’, co-founded kranky Records, which redefined the Chicago brand of 90’s indie rock.  It was a force in underground music, and is often credited with creating post-rock.  I had plenty to learn in this interview, and Bruce and I discussed his first gig as a roadie for the Laughing Hyenas, strange musical genres (including Proto Dungeon Synth), the significance of Labradford, and the importance of exclamation point placement.
