Today's episode is one of several featuring some of the artists from the 2023 Kensington & Chelsea Art Week/Trail, for info go to: https://www.kcaw.co.uk or @KCAWlondonIn this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Birungi Kawooya & Bokani (@Birungiart& @bokani)Birungi Kawooya: My art passionately embodies the beauty of the African diaspora with a focus on dance, nature and wellbeing. I take inspiration from Ugandan classical Kiganda dance styles, flash dancing by The Nicholas Brothers and hiplet from Homer Bryant, interpreting these influences in my vibrant collages using layers of Ugandan batik fabrics and cutout card. I enjoy the challenge of capturing these complex and sophisticated dance moves in my 2-dimensional art and am passionate about helping you to express your artistic own vision by creating your own artwork in my Mindful African Art workshops.Bokani: Bokani’s work is characterised by spontaneous, vibrant colour, fuelled by an exploration of themes and motifs engaging the viewer intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Painting has empowered her to move past the childhood loss of both parents to resolve questions of global female identity, black African heritage and belonging.Black Womxn at Rest: In an arresting and repetitive billboard style, this design spells out and depicts Black womxn resting pairing Birungi’s Black women figurative style with Bokani’s swirling paintings. The choice of bodies at rest will represent the diversity of Black womxn and normalizing everyday Black womanhood at rest. For more information on the Kensington Chelsea Art Week & Trail go tohttps://www.kcaw.co.ukFor more information on the Kensington Chelsea Art Week & Trail go tohttps://www.kcaw.co.ukTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: [email protected] Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast.
