Ep. 235: Loeb & Leopold – Lies, Love, & Lechery

from Fascinating Nouns

Almost 100 years ago, Loeb & Leopold shocked the world by murdering a fourteen year old kid by the name of Bobby Franks.  Why was this called “The Trial of the Century”?  Well Loeb and Leopold were brilliant students, and their families were extremely affluent.  The goal was to pull off the perfect kidnapping/ransom scheme, something they would be known for forever.  Killing Bobby wasn’t the goal, it was just an unfortunate inevitability.  And they would have gotten away with it too, it it wasn’t for those pesky glasses.  That crime is what this duo was known for, but their lives didn’t end at their conviction.  Erik Rebain became hooked on this story, and his extensive research became “Arrested Adolescence”, his most new book covering the life of Nathan Leopold.  This week I sit down with him and discuss all the details, including how Leopold became friends with Einstein while in jail, and Hugh Hefner once he got paroled.
