Ep. 237 - Parenting Pep Talk - Avoid The Power Struggle | Bryan Ward

from Dad Up Podcast · host Bryan Ward

Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I’m excited to share this new episode of Parenting Pep Talk! One of the most challenging things we can experience as parents is the power struggle with our kids. So how do we avoid the power struggle? This episode will help you as parents avoid this issue. Here are some tips for avoiding power struggles with your child: 1. Set clear and consistent rules: Make sure your child knows what is expected of them and what the consequences will be if they do not follow the rules. 2. Use positive reinforcement: Praise your child for good behavior, rather than focusing only on correcting misbehavior. 3. Avoid arguing or negotiating: If you give in to your child's demands, it can reinforce their belief that they can get what they want through power struggles. Instead, calmly and firmly state your expectations and stick to them. 4. Give your child choices: Giving your child the opportunity to make choices can help them feel more in control and less likely to engage in power struggles. 5. Encourage independent thinking: Encourage your child to solve problems and make decisions on their own, rather than always relying on you to make things happen. 6. Stay calm: It can be tempting to get upset when your child challenges your authority, but try to remain calm and composed. This can help deescalate the situation and prevent it from turning into a power struggle. 7. Be a good role model: Children learn by example, so make sure you model the behavior you want to see from your child. Remember that power struggles are a normal part of child development, and they will likely occur from time to time. The important thing is to stay consistent and use positive discipline strategies to teach your child how to manage their behavior and emotions.
