Ep 24 Does my kid really need to play more than one sport?
from Youth Sports Insider · host Sammi
https://heysammi.com/ Is it bad for a kid to specialize in one sport? a dad in tampa wrote to me because his son is obsessed with one sport, refuses to try anything else, and every adult at every barbecue keeps warning him about multi-sport athletes. in this episode i separate what the research actually says from what the barbecue says. the real risk has a name, and it's year-round, same-movement repetition at adult intensity in a growing body, not the number of jerseys in the closet. i explain why obsession at this age is love, not a diagnosis, and why forcing a second team as medicine teaches a kid that loving something too much gets you sentenced to something you hate. then the protective playbook: variety of movement without variety of teams, swimming and bikes and backyard nonsense all count, a real offseason every year, rotating positions inside the one sport, and the soreness signals worth reading. i also name the moment to hold the line, when the club asks for all twelve months, because pros take offseasons and somehow nine year olds aren't allowed to. and for the refusing part: stop selling other sports and start playing with him instead. if a second sport ever happens, it starts there, as his idea. got a question for the show? email me.
