Hey guys, this is a listener supported show and in order for us to stay on the air and keep it going we need help from you Our listeners visit patreon.com forward slash cash talk and donate as little as a dollar a month so we can keep this thing going Thank you You're listening to cash talk My name is Adrian. Hi, I'm a seat and we are your host at the cash talk podcast You can find us on Facebook Twitter and Instagram at cash talk podcast So I'm bringing two bottles of champagne actually not champagne per second per second or my favorite Okay, and what exactly is per second? We don't like a type of wine or is it a champion? Italian Okay, I like to bring my bougie out Well, I mean you're bringing the bougie per second and we're having a white party tomorrow We're gonna suppose we're gonna dress up in all white clothing and I haven't even been aware yet But really I have two dresses I'm gonna work because I don't really try things on like I should and so I got another dress and like the first one But still keep in the second one.
So why not why not? I already have my jewelry laid out And as you can see I have my hair ready to go for tomorrow I've done any of that stuff. We've got some of the decorations put together like we got a whole bunch of white sheets from a Resource so it's like cloth table-crossing what oh and some champagne flutes and things like that to ring in the new year But I've picked out my own forget So I'm slacking okay, yeah, I know our Kelly white I'm sorry. I'm doing um maybe I feel like there's one ever I think of like he just comes from my one thing people like I guess maybe rappers are in R&B artists.
Yes. Yes R&B artists They attend those kind of parties They're usually like or okay It was reminds me of like that video of Jan Jackson and the guy coming like walking on to the beach or whatever and he like he has Like white jacket on I feel like people are gonna be like what kind of video is she talking about? I have no idea. I made a video like that.
I feel like she's just picking something like he had like his shirt was open Didn't have a shirt on underneath it. Oh, yeah, exactly. Well, that's what I picture I saw a lot of that when we decided we want to do this white party for New Year's I kind of looked online and got some ideas of decorations and what people should wear and whatnot and there was a lot of summer stuff I guess not supposed to wear white after Labor Day is that a set of names? No, that has to be an antiquated thing.
All right, because you're not gonna tell me I can wear some color after a certain day That's just that's just first of all yeah, and then I feel like it is kind of an antiquated thing You know kind of a um Changing with the times I guess but they've got different kind of whites. They're like winter white and then summer white Yeah, it's just like it's one of those one of those habits like there's um There's a story out here with Thanksgiving like we're it's a tradition basically a story where somebody will cook a turkey and cut off the ends of the turkey And put it in the oven and that's how they always did it and they asked why they do it that way And it's like oh that's how my mom did it and the mom asked the grandmother Why she did it that way and she's like well, it's because the turkey didn't fit my oven So I had to cut the sides off you know what that's exactly up if there is some reason why it is the way it is I guess so that our clothes transition into The colder weather you know besides just getting rid of the shorts and the tank tops Yeah, so I'd love to live in a place where I never have to give up my shorts and tank tops Right don't have work closets that I'm like switching out. Mm-hmm. I want to just have that one closet spring and summer Yeah, that would be nice, but doing places like Florida and California and I don't know where you're so yeah Kind of a problem, but you know no shade to Florida or California So what's your new year's resolution gonna be for 2018?
Well, typically in the past I feel like I'd always like lose weight or something like that But I've really been getting into weights lifting weights and strength training that type of thing and I think I want that to be a part of my Resolution okay because I would like to it's really good It's a really good workout and you really feel like that there's gonna be actual results now I really like to run I've always run in the past and run as a cardio and I've always felt like you know if I If I want to lose weight, you know the whole calories in calories out thing, you know I can eat what I want to do in the day and then run totally not true I mean it does take the calories away, but it doesn't give you the kind of kind of body you'd like to have and right since we're going on that I'm gonna be doing my career as laner I would like to have you know, I'm arm toned. I would like to be toned. Yeah, yeah, and really just learning how to How to be that way just instinctively you know I'm admitted in your week call me like Bougie or whatever you want to say I'm I've kind of been working out like also doing weights off and on because with this cruise We're going on in nine months all of our friends are gonna be there I don't want to take my shirt off from everybody and feel embarrassed. I'm gonna take it off and be like oh I don't know we had a body like that Adrian yes, yes, I do I love it.
Oh, I know you had it like that. Well, you never asked so there you go I have to surprise us all Ask me again in August how I'm doing with that there It's gonna be like June July when we're like why is he swimming with his shirt on and we're like it's fine and then come September Right maybe I'll have the same strategy modesty all year, that's right. That's right So yeah, because I'm gonna be one of those that has like a different big things with every single day So I want to be cute and all of them and they're not gonna be one pieces either so do it Now I've had children That's a body I had pre-children That is definitely my resolution. I don't know if I want to add to that I want more than that There's definitely things I would like to do within the year But I feel like they're really just more like personal goals more than a resolution because I feel like a resolution is me Maybe resolving to be a better person by doing this I think this will make me healthy and it will keep me accountable for my body and What I want to see when I look in the mirror.
So right I got you mean I can kind of agree like that's I think my resolution this year It's not just something like oh when I save money It's actually something that will enrich my life when I'm completed Yeah, like me and my husband Jay have been working for the last year and I have to pay off our debt minimize our expenses and whatnot and I recently figured out I between the two of us I make more money but we are two hundred and forty eight dollars away from his salary being able to cover all of our expenses Mortgage utilities gas everything I'm aiming to take that two forty eight to zero in two thousand eighteen so that his salary can cover everything's going period That is really that's really specific and I Can really appreciate that being specific because I think we all tend to generalize our Resolutions we say I want to save money. Yeah, and that's great. I'm that's really say that but when you when you talk about Trying to cut down an expenses. It's more than just cutting on expenses It's I want to us to be in a place where if something happened in my job that we're fine on his check and tell him find something or maybe vice versa So, you know, you're and that's really good because a lot of people have to have the two incomes They have to yeah, it's kind of difficult today's age to To live on just one income once you are really making sure that you're hitting all your budgets and that you're staying within Or reasonable spending reasonable amount of money, so it's difficult to do on one income, but I really might have that That's really great.
Thank you. Hopefully I can actually make it happen But that's one of those things kind of like diving and my resolution of getting to zero And my resolution with my money this year is I find Like Missy mentioned that most resolutions are really generic in their general and it's hard to really gauge when you've actually succeeded Yes, like saying oh well. I want to save money this year if you save $25 you technically you say money Yeah, you did or if you say 1000 you also save money so I mean like One thing that I've tried to do myself lately is using dieting as an example Not that I'm diving but instead of saying that I'm going to work on my body or I'm going to die this year I'm going to lose weight. I try to encourage myself to say alright Well, I'm going to cut down my carbs or I'm going to make a point to go to the gym three days a week every month for at least Six months in a row something that I know here's the beginning and here's the end and when I reach the end It is done if I want to keep going I can keep going but I know that I've already completed this goal Yes, yes Yeah, and if you've that's something that you have resolved to do that year after six months You've probably gotten yourself in a routine where you and it's kind of hard to cut To add something else into your day if you're really busy But if you've managed to do that because it's something that really means a lot to you and you want to make it happen You know, let's say you just you know you work at nine to five and then maybe you pick kids up afterwards Or you know and then you go to the grocery store and you do those things and by the you know The next thing you know, it's nine o'clock and if you have kids you're getting the right for bed And then when it's time for you, it's like ten o'clock.
Yeah, you're like I can't I go to Jim at ten o'clock So if you can try to squeeze in those three days, then you can probably do it for the rest of the year So if you do those six months you could probably save yourself. Hey, I mean why not go six more Yeah, that's how I'm going with a lot of stuff. It's like well, you know I've done six months. Why not keep going?
Why would I stop now? I want to save $500 this year. I saved $500. Why stop?
That's going you know, I think if people are deciding to To save money for the year a good goal would be Christmas I know where we're just you know I think it's so weird to say that we were just past Christmas because it feels like we were like today's Christmas Yeah, now we're just now we're past it But um if you're someone who maybe does not have a ton of money to spend on Christmas just spending with your regular paycheck And you want to save money. Why don't you give yourself a goal of Christmas money? Just say you know, this is about how much I would like to spend because if you're like me and kids are getting older They're gives me more expensive as they get older. Yes, they do Today they like everybody's got like it where they had cute little kid electronic things when they were younger that were like 15 $20 now it's a dull electronics that are several hundred so tablets and drones.
Yes. Yes I got a son of drone this year and so it It's just to add up so if you tell yourself, okay I think I need a thousand dollars and if that's it's a goal you want then then fantastic then spend a thousand It'll also allow you to only spend that money if you want to you can say you know My goal is gonna be not to just say $1000 to just save it But save a thousand dollars so that when it comes Christmas time if something happens You know, maybe I do my job or maybe I have a medical procedure and now I'm afraid that my kids won't have Christmas Or I'm afraid I can't get anybody anything for Christmas if you've decided stick with your $1000 goal for Christmas You have saved through the year and then so you're good to go But you have a resolution and you've also given yourself money for Christmas Yeah, and honestly you get a lot of peace of mind having that money there like one thing I told anybody who asked me about you know, how should I say for Christmas especially this time of year? Remember how you felt a week or two ago when you're trying to work over time cut down on bill with the side what's important trying to find Every sale to get every dollar saved you can to try to buy a gift for somebody you care about That feeling sucks You could if you get paid by weekly every other week you could save $25 a paycheck which would be $540 by Christmas So when that time comes around you got to the store buy what you want take the money from your savings count move on Yeah, that's and that's not that $25 is pretty good, especially when you think about Every dollar being counted 25 is I'd say it's probably what we spend on lunch in less than a week Yeah, so I'd say that's that seems doable if you can if you can look at those numbers You know at a glance or whatever and see how much you can make you can't save that much if maybe let's say you do $10 But then when it gets towards the end of the year maybe you get a raise or whatever and you're able to add more to it That's fine If you give yourself even a modest goal and you tell yourself that you want to hit that by the end of the year That's great because like you said that is difficult when you you know, you know If you if it's just you and maybe you want to buy for your parents you want to buy for your siblings and you know It comes Christmas time and you can't really do that and you're trying to find like a cheap gift for your parents I know I've been in that. Oh, yeah, it's like you can't go with me handed.
Yeah, exactly you're gonna your going to a family Get together and you didn't get your pants what you'd like to get them. So you're like, okay. Well, here's Here's one of the mug. Yeah, it's like that We have a dead gift you always see seeing and like the like the registry area of the store Oh, here's a bottle opener or something exactly yeah, you get two of those and you're like well not empty handed But this is not really what I wanted to get them.
Yeah, so you know if you don't want to be in that position You know, there's a there's an idea for your saving It's a really good idea actually and that's that's just one of the things you can be doing throughout the year I mean one thing that I personally do it's not going to come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars by the end of the year But not only am I a little healthier for it, but I get to save money along the way is I personally a couple years ago Gave up coffee and soda completely and I know nobody can do it, but yeah, he's weird I mean like one thing I did intentionally because at the time I was working at one of my last jobs at a credit union I was working in a branch that had a coffee machine right there in the lobby Yeah, I love that coffee hanging out and staring at you You know, you push a button and you get this nice big warm cup And I realized I was drinking four to five of them every single day five days a week And if I was working a weekend I was having two or three on the weekends also and they kind of occurred to me You know, this is instant coffee and it's not like I'm taking it black I'm always adding sugar cream or something so it's not that healthy. It's just sugar. I'm taking in It is wonderful, but not when you're having a 50 cups a week or something now, but like I added up and make us really see But like one thing I decided to do is before I got to the point I'm not drinking coffee and soda anywhere is I only decided to do it at home So if I went out to eat I would just order water and that's you know to restaurant two or three dollars Yeah, so you're yes, exactly you're saving money while you are because it is pretty close to me dollars for a drink I mean, maybe that's maybe that's the cheap-scated me, but I don't ever order if I make kids with me I'll order them sprite or something, but they never I don't ever get any drinks I actually don't even know what's on like the menus for drinks unless I'm getting like a Called beverage river. Yeah, I don't I'm just gonna drink water.
What's the point? Mm-hmm. That's better than extra Yeah, you get to that goes along with you or giving up soda and giving up coffee now soda is an excellent idea It really does I give up that could that cook I guess months ago and It was mainly for my doctors. I like to probably drink less than that soda and I agree.
I was looking at artificial sugar information and Personally, I don't want to have anything with artificial sugars anymore after we eat so I gave it up for that But also because you know if you're drinking soda then you are substituting it for something that could be so much better for you But I do drink coffee. I drink coffee every single day. I actually I feel like I like the routine of it Yeah, I can check the warm cup every morning. I am yes.
Yes I was get out I'll turn on because my hearing has a Has a reservoir water reservoir, so it has to warm up so get up press the button going to bed till here it turn off I go back up and go to it and then get a cup of coffee and then I sit there and It's kind of a moment to myself before my day begins because once my day begins It feels like one thing right after the other yeah, like the typical grind or whatever So it's a time for myself, you know along with you know the fact that it helps wake me up in the morning So I don't know that I'll ever give up coffee. That's fair. Well, I know that one thing I recently done It's hard getting Jay on board, but I've already kind of agreed and I'm doing it myself is I'm not drinking alcohol when I got Tressurants anymore I used to go and have a drink or two every time I went out because why not but you know any restaurant like really get a beer or a cocktail or Something it's like between four or ten dollars per person per drink and it's always these weak drinks I don't really do anything anyway But it kind of occurred to me if I'm gonna pay ten dollars for a drink that is basically sugar water with like a hint of alcohol in there That's true some places you it's like you feel like you're like I had three drinks I feel fine. I can't hold me.
I can't even they forgot the alcohol they like My tolerance that high now you know you start thinking about your own lifestyle choices after that right? And but like when it's ten dollars a drink I mean that's the price of advertisers and some odd trays at that point So why am I when drink exactly not getting food or doubling my bill beside have a drink with me and that's so true with me When I go out and if it's just what's if I go out with some friends or whatever and we're going out there And then maybe later on we're you know We're going dancing or we're going if we're doing something where it's more than just us going out to eat or never You know I'll have drinks kind of get my night started because I don't like going to I guess clubs or yeah, there's a environment like you know you're going into something you got to be in that headspace exactly And I am and the drinks are so much more expensive there unless you're getting like a shot or something You really just not much alcohol in the drink so and but if I'm just going like maybe as a couple or something I'd usually just get water and then maybe we'll eat a drink beforehand or a drink afterwards because it's just the two of us So we're really I mean we're not camping out there at the restaurant Yeah, ours when you're with friends at time passes because there's so many of you there or maybe you haven't caught up in a while So maybe you are kind of camping out there for a little bit So ordering drink is fine, but your bill so much higher with with alcohol. Yes, it really is I remember when we were going to when we went to New Orleans I ordered two of these fancy long-eyed teeth. That's my that's my free flight drink because I like flying by hate it and And so these were like it was like the top shelf or whatever and it was it was an interesting type of drink because they put these little beads in it I don't know what they were other than amazing and so they're like here's your your alcohol and because we made it real fancy It's three times the price like that so when we got our ticket, I was like Before our trip even started I was like oh crap But you know a lot of restaurants and bars do that is they will whether it's a fancy drink or not They don't take what the price is so you know you're spending to get a bill.
Yeah, that's that sucks. Yeah, you're like crossing your fingers Yeah, so definitely if you if you want to save somebody going out and you know and be healthy and Your resolution saving money or you can you know if those are both of your resolutions you can solve them both Yeah, I just order a water. Mm-hmm. It might be nice to have that drink, but your body and exactly healthier for it So there you go, but one thing also I know I've mentioned it in the past, but it's one of my favorite things whether you're talking about alcohol or shopping or anything When I have an issue like don't judge the other day I went to Lowe's and I bought myself a toolbox You should know I judge you a lot of people quiet.
I mean that this is why this is one of the reasons why our besties So so I went and I got this toolbox and for what it's worth I did tell myself I was gonna spend a hundred dollars or less because I had a 50 dollar gift card I was like alright, I'll come out pocket 50 bucks. That's what I want I went over $4 to find this particular toolbox that I wanted to buy but Before I even went and got it. I thought to myself alright, so it's going to be $50 out of my pocket that I have to pay to get this item Let's say I make $10 an hour do I want to work for five hours to pay for this thing? If I don't it kind of puts perspective into it like is this worth that man time and for me it was I decided like this something I want I'm gonna be in 2018 I'm gonna try to declare my whole house from the back bedroom closet to the kitchen to the shed to the garage and Having somewhere for all my tools in one place is gonna help that investment Time for an investment so that's what I say to my purses.
Mm-hmm. Even if it's like a two-day salary But it's it's a great trick to keep things in perspective and it gets really serious when you start looking at some of the more expensive items like TVs and cars and whatnot is it really worth these many hours like once and once and once of my paycheck to pay for this car that I want to buy I'm when you're talking about cars. I use the I use that hourly I use that with my kids and when now that my daughter's getting older. She's only a couple years away from driving a car And so when we drive well when I'm driving around I like to point out cars and then I'll talk about What they're you know how much they estimation of what they cost and what I think that they cost and you know What you're getting out of the vehicle that you're buying if you're someone like my sister has four kids So she she has a pilot and that is enough for a kid So she's gonna spend a little more than someone who has a small compact car So because her needs are different than someone who would would drive one of those and so you know I'm talking her about prices and things like that and I'll say okay Well, this is this particular vehicle is worth forty thousand and if you work somewhere and your annual salary is forty thousand I said that takes you in a whole year.
That's a whole year of your money for a vehicle Yeah, a whole year every money for a vehicle and that's not talking about anything else all year because every dollar you make Is they ready to go into that car? Yes? Yeah, if you and so Mainly because I feel like unless until until kids get their own job. They won't really understand Making money and spending and having a whole bunch of bills to pay Yeah, they might be saving up for something but they can do that because you're the parent and you're paying for everything else They don't have several bills.
They have like one they have been saving up for yeah They're not juggling and picking and choosing yes Yeah, they're having a budget and things like that So yeah, I'll point out and then when she if she wants this really expensive outfit I think that takes me three hours three hours for the self it takes me I have to work three hours for this to pay for just that outfit Yeah, that's that's not including the rest of clothes in there I said that's probably six years of me working in your father right now. So that's so that is a that's a really good You know, it really perspective on things. I mean it really does it saved me a bunch of times I mean when I was younger I never did and I'm getting older and actually thinking about what I'm buying that saved me I can't count how many times of do I really want this watch that's gonna take what seven hours of me working or something? I'm good.
I have plenty watches in my closet. I'll hang with them for now But it also depends on the hat what kind of I guess kind of spender you are I know we've I know we've talked about this before I Know bad about Getting little things here and there. I'm real bad about and I'll get four and five dollar things But I'll get several and that really has up and it's every so often like in the week Yes, exactly and so you might if you're if you're someone who buys you maybe I mean rent a movie or Gets some gets a chapstick at the and when you're at the checkout counter You buy some chapstick cuz it's just four bucks or if you're you just or if you're like me when you're at Ulta and they have an entire while you're waiting They have like just almost an entire store of just like travel size things that are like twenty dollars and less You're like well, I just I'm an unneeded these things I was waiting twenty dollars or less. Yeah, so if you you know if you're someone who gets things Small purchases you might think of it Think of the whole ten dollars an hour thing different than someone who is looking at bigger price items kind of like Adrian He you know he was looking at that that toolbox.
Yeah, so you know you might think of it differently, but you know I guess it just depends on your preference and how you how important your money is in comparison to how how hard you have to work For it. I guess yeah, very true speaking of working for money. I don't like giving away stuff Well, I like I like donating donating is fine But I don't like giving away my money to companies that I for aren't giving me anything So one thing that I always try to do every year and I actually have started with car insurance I'm kind of going down a little mental list in my head if I'll go and see am I paying? The correct amount of money with the amount of value I'm getting out of it Mm-hmm like is my insurance rates what I think they should be based on some kind of coverage that I'm getting do I have a good rate with cable and Internet am I wasting money at M fees or subscription services like my gym membership?
We didn't go for three months and I told Jay alright if we don't go by December 15th I'm going to cancel it because it's just we're paying all this money every month or not even using it It's bringing no value to either of us. We kind of started going again I think a lot of people can tell them what the gym to and I think Jim's Account on that I guess they do because not everybody I mean you might go a whole bunch of one month and then once the next month so they're like it doesn't matter It's still coming out of your account regardless. No so many gyms make it hard to cancel anyway Why not does yeah if you want to get out there gonna make you go through all these little hoops that try to get out of that Contract or that payment agreement you have going on but that's that's just one of those things like I mean I don't have my budget in my account every month because I don't have any time for that But I try to piroki look and say alright am I getting value everything I'm paying for does everything make sense? Mm-hmm, and you were talking about the you know the internet and cell phone that kind of thing I check my I regularly check my Because my cell phone and my internet is through one company and so they do a lot of upgrades, you know those you know If you have six gigabytes you can upgrade to ten and the thing is they don't tell you this stuff No, they don't you will just have it and they're like thanks for paying us every month and the other thing about my mother so ago I was looking because I'm thinking my daughter a phone And so I'm looking at how much it would be because I kind of want to do one of those prepaid things that way I can take A phone with my not feel bad about still having a contract on and all this kind of thing So I'm looking around at those plans and then I thought okay Well, you know I'm gonna look at my own here just see if there's something and I got an extra gig for ten dollars $10 less than up seriously Then I'm paying right now just because I looked at a switch it and they it's just like a credit to my next account or Whatever or tonight at next the next month and I was like well I'm getting more and paying a little less I don't see why they would tell me about that because I mean that's I guess any business, but you know if you just Look yeah, you could be saving money.
I realize it that happened to me too a couple months ago I mistakenly updated all the apps on my phone over cellular and it didn't occur to me how much data it actually takes to do that So I kind of ran my like monthly usage over it was good times Either way I called for eyes and I was like hey, so um I went over and I don't want to pay all these over fees I just that's not me What can we do and through the conversation they changed my plan where I got like an extra two or three gigs of data plus rollover? So if I don't use it all in one month It's kind of bouncing up I got that for like nine dollars more a month And if I just paid my over a doubt I've been like 30 dollars in the hole But now I have more for just like a couple dollars more So I mean I like to roll over to because if you could be because if you have those months where you're not and if you've taught yourself You know, I like if you work somewhere when you're my fire or if you find yourself at certain places What is my fine? You don't have to use your your data So you really can roll it over and you can't I do that a lot if I know I'm going to trip soon I will find Wi-Fi anywhere I can and I'll just not use any data So that when I'm actually away from my house and I can start just streaming stuff and using GPS and playing on my phone I can write not think twice. That's the life I'm about Nothing I like to do So the toolbox right I mentioned it earlier.
Um, I was looking online and they are not gonna be your friend or your enemy It's my friend today a way to keep my toolbox Organized is to get felt and you can do like, you know a layer of yellow felt with black felt over it Or not felt it's kind of like foam sort of and you can cut out the shape of the tool and put your tool in there So that any glancion kind of look and see hey, well, this tool's missing and then everything has a specific home That's one of those things that's online. Yeah, don't give me that face That's one of those things I saw that's pretty cool and I looked at some like DIYs on how to make that happen It's not that hard the most organized thing I've ever heard and this is from someone who organizes and reorganizes But I mean that that sounds I mean you can't tell although if you have a system like that You probably are gonna have missing tools, but if you did you'd know yeah, I'll say oh this one's missing Where's it at where is it at but that's one of those things that I'm gonna do this year But DIY looking things online looking up things online figure out how to do it is a great way to save a few bucks One thing that I actually push J to do is like cocktails. I Like we get so get up good at him too. He's getting good You can go out to eat at a restaurant or something and have three drinks pay your bill move on or you could take the money That you'd spend about those three drinks at the restaurant by the liquor and all the ingredients and the garnishes and things like that Google it figure out how to make a nice drink make a drink for all your friends when they come over the exact same cost and it looks Like you got it going on yeah, it makes a really nice presentation, but it's just DIY you save money.
Yes, exactly I can't say that I've done the same tool tool example when I come to DIY bitch, but I'm really what I love when I come to DIY is repurposing things I like to Take something that was meant for Let's say was a napkin holder. I want to use that instead of an apple holder That's where I put my bills. That's where I put my envelope. Mm-hmm.
I have one of those right here on my desk actually Yeah, see it's like when you if you buy something that's specifically for something they can they can charge a little more Yeah, but not an happen holder cost me anything I put a dollar 50 and if I were to buy something that was a envelope holder Guarantee you that would have been at least five dollars because that's what you're using it for Yeah, I like to yeah, I like to it's the same thing It's exactly actually because it's an happen holder. It looks fancier So I like to repurpose things in that way as far as you know, yes, that's my personal DIY I like to I like to go to like dollar for in places like that and take things that were meant to be for something else and turn It into use it for another another reason like the whole shoe holders that you can turn into And once you put on your door you can turn into use those little pockets or something I've seen those I saw yesterday you can get like a coat rack that you know You just kind of pegged your hand your coat on and you can hang your shoes from those also I'm a big fan of that Especially looking around the house and seeing like in all those clouds that you don't want to go in see what kind of stuff You actually have and what you can turn it into maybe can sell it and if not then maybe you just built something that's more useful that declutters An area or that saves you a few bucks because I don't have to go buy this or deal with that. Mm-hmm. That's great Mm-hmm or one thing one thing we did in the spring and it was fantastic when we broke even all so excited was We went to the store and bought about $50 worth of car wash stuff sponges soap waxes brushes everything and Decided we're gonna hand wash our cars instead of taking like my car to the automatic car wash five times and then blowing through 50 bucks We can't exactly at least 50.
They're not fine car washes that are cheap. It's ridiculous No, and then you end up like my car with swirl marks on it. Yeah Oh Hand washing it for the same cost of those five car washes we can do it a hundred times Like there's that much soap and water is nothing when you think about it coming out of your house to wash your car I guess easy way to save a few bucks and you get some private ownership, which is kind of nice, but That's one of them things you know proud of ownership Another thing I'm I stopped when we got a little heavier paying off debt But we are about to hit a milestone in our journey So I'll start ratching it back up is with my payroll like whenever I get paid if I work any overtime I'll take half of that overtime and put it into another savings account because it's money I wasn't expecting it's money. That's unusual coming in anyway, so I'll just put it aside I don't think twice about it.
Yeah, that's a good idea. That's a good idea right now I'm in the middle of getting overtime and I'm excited about it because it is you know I make my budget based on what I make regularly regularity hour yeah, so That above it I can decide what I you know what I want to do with it and maybe maybe save it maybe put it towards a bill that was really high Like my emergency room bill that I had that I had a few months ago Yeah, you can't or you know or maybe if you used your credit card to pay for that emergency You know you can put that money on your so that's kind of what I usually do I use it I actually have something that's either outstanding or going to happen or I can put it in savings but typically with my my sense medicine or It seems like there's always something medical or dental or something like that that is never just a couple dollars So that goes to that so that makes sense actually I hit I had an epiphany on that earlier this year I've been taking money like automatically like five ten percent of my paycheck just direct deposit somewhere else So it doesn't come into my account or all my money is but moving this money somewhere else I had a family member who needed like they got into a financial situation and needed some help So I took some money out of my savings account to help them But then I realized I took that out of a savings account I was kind of in sticking money in next to my checking account And I totally forgot about this when I have somewhere else like moving money away from where the rest of my stuff is You got so much to tell you I'm not much you got right and that's a good problem to have because I've never been that way ever in My life normally I could say I'm just in my savings and it'd be like 200 bucks on a good day And now I'm like oh crap, I forgot even had that put aside, huh interesting It's because it's a lifestyle thing I mean that's when we when we talk about resolutions That's the bottom line is I think that's what I say to myself Is that's me resolving to be better in this way And if you have you know if you're resolving yourself to be better with your money to be better with saving better with budgeting You know better with the decisions that you're making on what you're spending your money on And you decide okay 2018 is gonna be here then I'm gonna be financially responsible or you can Being fine being financially responsible can take you kind of where Adrian was just saying where before You you couldn't have one $200 in your savings. It didn't only happen But you can take yourself to a point where it instinctively you have more than 200 because you taught yourself to be more financially responsible and and And not even just financially responsible But also learning how to sacrifice to be that way right because it's not necessarily saying that you're just you're just spending your money left And right You could be using everything that you're spending your money on if you have a bunch of subscription services If you're using them already like then you're using them and you feel justified to spend your money on it But if you're using those subscriptions, but it's something extra you don't really need to be spending your money on That's what I mean by sacrifice you can instead of having No three different streaming music streaming apps or ever and they're all nice. They'll be something different cut it down to one That's that's that's sacrificing if you're somebody who loves music and that sounds horrible to you You can give yourself a little compromise and cut one cut two out or whatever.
Yeah, that's actually a good like you mentioned That's a good thing to realize is you have goals and you have resolving issues and like you said For me a goal is saying I want to pay off a credit card resolving an issue is hey I want to save for Christmas this year because I've never been able to do that Yes, I say a lot of people can say that too. I'd say a lot a lot I used to do the Christmas clubs, but I was real bad about taking money out or ever So I don't do that but what I do is I Set a number in my head to where I want to hit and throughout the year when I put the Set of the same thing that you do I put say things in another another bank And so I take a certain amount of money from there for it and because I know how I am with the Christmas clubs So I'm real bad about seeing the money in front of me. So if it's at another place and that's what I do So I kind of with that savings I use it for one of things like that Yeah, so it's not something for all year long like if something happens to my heat heating It doesn't come from that savings. So that's just kind of But if you're someone who you know is real bad about Saving for something specific or maybe something that's will far away if you say okay Well, that's kind of like our like our cruise nine months away, but when we first started this It was more than a year away So we were like okay, that's so far ahead, but now we're at less than a year So that sneaks up on you and I think people don't say like they would like to because the goal is so far away Yeah, very true like That's exactly one of those things where when it's over a year away It's easy to kind of feel like it's not real.
It's not something that actually matters So you'll get to it later you'll worry about it later and then makes a notion for you And that's kind of how like that goal would be or Christmas or anything else, but like you said I mean Resolving an issue realizing this is something I do this is something I don't like that I do But I know I do it so what can I do to actually make it better for myself? You know your weaknesses very simply put like I know my weakness One of my big weaknesses is making random Slightly planned purchases for my house and I can say oh well I planned it out because I thought about it three days ago and I went to bed woke up and went to bed and woke up So now I've slept on it So I'm gonna go out and spend five thousand dollars or something So I've been making a point of like this year one thing I want to do is replace the carpet in my bedrooms with hardwood or laminate or something I haven't decided what but I'm also making A point that I'm going to save so much money to do that and if I don't save enough money I'm not gonna do it point blank period no matter how many ways I justify that I can take the money from the savings account or put On a credit card and pay it off by that day. I know that that's a weakness of mine is just falling into the older team I don't like that. Yes, mm-hmm Because I think that's probably the hardest part of of doing a resolution is your time to change your own habit You're having to because even though something you don't like you can kind of comfortable in the way that you are When you're at a comfort level you want to stay there even if it's not doing you any good even that macron cheese goes straight your hips It's comfortable to you and it's easy to do that.
It tastes better It's it's more it's something you've been doing for a long time and that's probably one of the hardest things About it about resolutions is okay Well, I want to lose weight but when I got a fork I'm so tired and you know You've been doing it every year every year you're tired after work every year you do this and Because there's something you don't want to change about your life and the way that you are doing things on a daily basis And if you stick to this resolution then that means you're gonna change something can change is hard. Yes Yes, yes it is. I know one thing I did speaking on that gym conversation is I'm gonna blame Jake is life is easier if I do that Yes, when I can hear right yeah, exactly that's part of the stressful benefits when it comes to the gym He doesn't like to go after work because it's crowded But one thing we did for a while I was in there and this will have to work But one thing I did is like we couldn't prioritize the time over the summer to go after work because we would hang out with friends Or have barbecues or go swimming or 101 outdoor activities. So during the summer we went before work every morning We woke up an hour earlier went out there got some cardio in lifted some weights Shoured up got ready for work and went on to work because we knew at night we wouldn't we'd never do it and here We are in the winner it's darker earlier and so you're in the house a little bit earlier So now we can go after work because we're not doing the things we were doing before so kind of finding that balance I mean maybe this is what this habit works for a few months and then something happens and it changes But being able to read that and pick back up and keep going just one of those things I know I have to work on but being aware that it's something out there helps me succeed Yes predicting it and then conquering it.
Mm-hmm. You mentioned that made me think of this one thing that I kind of subconsciously do is Like one of my goals was to work out so I had that gangster body about a time around the ship, but she said Thanks, If I tell myself that I'm going to do this between right now and nine months away from me sail away I'm gonna also be telling myself. I have nine months to do it So what I kind of do in my head is say alright I have to go to the gym three times this month when I do like those three times or whatever I'll renew it and say alright next month three times next month three times just keep doing that so instead of counting out nine months I'm counting out 30 days. Do I mean I go for 30 days?
All right, what about the next 30 days? Yeah, and all that added up you were able to meet your resolution, so that's a good idea That's smart sometimes it's easier when you can look at it for more short term like that So one thing that I I needed actually it's probably one thing I'm gonna be doing here very soon is my 401k I I think I contribute about 4% I was at 15 and I brought it down when we started paying off debt I love to do 15 love it. But I also you know like to you know eat every day I was like to be my children and give them clothes. Mm-hmm.
So well, I mean not everybody can do that But like I said earlier, I mean we're pretty dang close to leaving on one salary So we got to truly out Adrian But my story So at work we're going into review season where everybody's about to start getting raises and most people's raises are like a percentage of your salary So like let's say if you get a 4% raise it's 4% your salary pretty simple what I like to do myself is Like let's say I got a 4% raise I will take 2% of that 4% and put it on 401k so I right now contributing a certain percentage to my Retirement I'll just increase it by 2% it's money. I'm not used to getting anyway, and it's gonna be tax-free. It'll compound. It'll grow That's not I suppose they do I know a lot of like one thing that I didn't realize for quite a while and I can't imagine how much money I lost either was Contributing enough to your 401k to get the company match because a lot of companies will give you like it Let's you contribute a certain percentage.
They'll match up to that same percentage Yeah, I'm always to the company match. It's funny Seriously, and I know I like the first year or two because what I got my first 401k I think like 19 or 20. I didn't know what the heck it was I'm not thinking about retirement when I was two seconds out of high school in college So I did the bare-frickin minimum I just kept the money and then I grew up a little bit and I did a little bit of research and I realized holy crap I probably gave away hundreds and tens of thousands of dollars exactly that sucks But one of those Resolutions is learning about my retirement and saying how can I improve it? How can I put more money aside so that when I retire I'm a millionaire and I go on all the cruises I want that gangster body I mentioned so With that gangster body I mentioned earlier let me I'm gonna maintain it right that's what I say now at a lofty age of like 26 almost 27 Call me a game when I'm 60.
Oh goodness. I can see the gray hair already. Yeah, I Would see that's kind of right and when I look at them resolutions I look at resolutions coming from someone who isn't 26 anymore, and I think 26 was just yesterday So am I making resolutions that are different now? We're doing the same thing right and because I how many years can you say I'm gonna do the same?
Yes, exactly and I'm not saying that 35 is you know I'm not gonna death store can we get a my a our p magazine But I am I'm not 20 anymore and when you're in the 20s are like kind of my 20s forever and then you hit 30 And you're like oh my gosh, I'm 30. Yeah, so I think there You know there are different you do want different things when you get older and things are that you thought were so important aren't important now And I mean vice versa, so I'll do you want to do that ending remarks? I guess just what is your new resolution? Well whatever sounds sexy.
Oh, okay, I do naturally sound sexy So that's just that's just gonna come out easy breezy. Yes easy breezy. Oh sexy. So there you go.
Um, I see Strickland. Okay. Yeah Hmm Deniedy land anyways, um Circle case you are familiar because of your youth. Um, okay, so Okay, so what is your new your solutions and I'm talking to all you podcast listeners out there.

Oh, yeah I mean it didn't have to be I mean missy wants to hear like the extravagant stuff I just want to hear you say that uh, I'm gonna put an extra percentage in my 401k or something boring But no, it's a hair color over here like no matter what you're aspiring towards this year I hope that you took away something from today's show I mean we kind of rambled a little bit but there's there's a difference like we said between making a goal and making a change So if you decided at some point in the last year or this year that enough's enough and you want to actually be different Or you just want to try something you want to make your life easier?
