Sin embargo, algunos de estos, están ubicados en regiones controladas en su mayoría por autoridades no estatales, es decir guerrilleros y paramilitares. Aunque parece que el número de estas zonas calientes están disminuyendo, el Tapón del Darién continúa en la misma situación. Pasar por el Darién a pie tiene muchos riesgos, como el faltal incidente del aventurero sueco, Jan Philip Braunisch, en 2013.
