A common and reliable formation involves having one player, typically the best ball-handler (point guard), inbound the basketball quickly before the defense can get set. Two other players, often the shooting guard and small forward, should sprint to the sideline areas near the free-throw line extended, creating width and providing immediate outlets. The power forward should flash to the middle of the court, near the free-throw line, presenting a crucial target in the vulnerable heart of the press. The center's primary role is to act as a safety valve, staying deep down the court as a long pass option if the initial outlets are denied, which helps to keep the defense honest and prevents them from overplaying the ball-side. Once the initial setup is established, the goal is to advance the ball with sharp, decisive passes rather than risky dribbling. The inbounder's first look should be to the sideline player on the ball side. The player receiving the pass should look immediately to the middle of the court to the power forward, as attacking the middle is the quickest way to break down a press. If the middle is not open, the player should look to pass up the sideline or reverse the ball quickly to the inbounder, who should have stepped onto the court after passing. The key principles are to maintain spacing, get the ball to the middle of the floor, and advance the ball with the pass, forcing the defense to shift and open up lanes to attack the basket for an easy scoring opportunity on the other end.
