Welcome to the second of our Royal Ascot shows where I would like to take you back 50 years to the day when Australian jockey Ron Hutchinson won the Ascot Gold Cup on the Duke of Norfolk’s’ horse Ragstone Ron Hutchinson, now a sprightly 96 years old joined me from his family home in Melbourne to remember a dream day in his long racing career when Ragstone, a horse bred by the Duke got up to win the most prestigious prize of the Royal meeting. Ron is the main guest on this Royal Ascot feature episode alongside another Gold Cup winner in Michael Hills, who won the race in 1994 and Tim Cox a former trustee of the National Horse Racing Museum and owner of the Cox Library. Tim provides some historical knowledge about the Royal meeting while Michael adds his thoughts on what a horse needs to win the 2 two-mile four-furlong Group 1 contest. 20 June 1974 was Hutchy’s dream day at Royal Ascot.
