EP 277: When Focusing on the Breath is Uncomfortable
from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns
The breath is an ideal object of meditation for a few different reasons: It’s always with us. It’s always present. And by paying attention to our breath, we encourage ourselves to breathe more deeply, which calms our nervous system and gives us more oxygen. But sometimes, as was the case with one person who attended my free, weekly stress reduction workshop last night, focusing on our breath can be hard. It can even promote anxiety for us. If this is the case for you, I’ll say the same thing I did for this woman last night: we can help you use one of your five senses instead. The senses are also always with us and always present and, if done right, can be just as effective an object of meditation as our breath. If you’d like more information, drop a comment below or send me a DM. (And if you’d like a link to register for my weekly workshop, let me know!)
