Ep 29 - So You Want To Write Music for Film and TV? with Jim McGrath pt 2
from Vocal Lab
This week on The Vocal Lab, I sit down with Jim Mcrath (pronounced McGraw). a Toronto-based composer best known for his television work, including the hit series: Degrassi: The Next Generation, Killjoys, CBC's Republic of Doyle and Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town. Interestingly, Jim's theme for Degrassi was featured in Drake's video "I'm Upset" which saw over 95 million views. Jim has also written arrangements for such recording artists as Tom Cochrane (with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra), Ian Thornley and Big Wreck (with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra); the Tower of Power Horns, Manteca, The Northern Pikes, Chantal Kreviazuk, Sarah Slean, and most recently for Steven Page in concert with the Vancouver Symphony. We talk about the interesting career path of intentionally going into writing for film and TV, by way of advertising to start. Since Jim has also done a lot of arranging for some major artists, we talk through some of the specifics around that part of the work as well. This is an excellent interview to listen to for anyone looking at different career paths within the industry! As usual, you will hear half the interview Monday, and the other half on Thursday! www.jimmcgrath.ca Also Mentioned: YouTube: Scary Pockets American Boy ft.
