EP 292: How to Anchor The Wandering Mind (And Why It's Beneficial to Do So)

from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns

Almost all the stress we experience in modern society comes from our thoughts. And because of how many thoughts we, as humans, have every day - over 60,000 - most of us experience stress on a chronic level. Not only does this chronic stress pose serious risks to our health, it also prevents us from showing up to our lives as our authentic selves with all our potential. The root of these stress inducing thoughts is our wandering mind. Any time we’re doing something that doesn’t require our focused attention - which is like 95% of whatever we do all day - our minds wander. And because our human brains are wired for survival, when our minds wander, they almost ALWAYS wander to things that worry us. One of the most common of these non task oriented activities is driving. We don’t usually even notice the familiar route we take to, say, our kids school at pick up. So while we’re not thinking about driving, we’re usually thinking about our worries. And when we show up to our kids’ school, we’re showing up as a product of these thoughts and reacting to our kids through this prism. So I’d like to offer you a meditation for driving. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hGrZyJdiT63Pf7ujad7kaTJrwG634pFQ/view?usp=sharing
