EP 295: Breaking The Cycle of Generational Trauma with Mindful Parenting

We’ve all heard of generational trauma, right? One example is that almost every person in an abusive relationship as an adult will be found to have been abused on some level as a young child. This has to do with how we develop as young children - in the first seven years of our lives, we are soaking up the way our caregivers and other people in our lives interact with us and with each other. This information becomes our world view; our programming, if you will. The experiences we have as young children become IMPLICIT memories and IMPLICIT biases. In other words, it’s all part of our subconscious. One of the most profound effects of mindfulness practices is that we can bring the IMPLICIT to the EXPLICIT as we widen and sharpen our awareness. This allows us, as individuals of any age, to grow out of the habits and automatic behaviors dictated by our implicit memories and biases. But as parents, it allows us to break these generational cycles and free our children from the trauma and emotional difficulties that often result.
