Ep 3.08: Father Dempsey, Father Dunn, and the Fight for Human Dignity

This episode continues the exploration of St. Louis’s immigrant poverty and introduces two of the city’s most remarkable Catholic champions: Father Timothy Dempsey and Father Peter Dunn. Monsignor and Teresa begin by noting the parallel charitable efforts among Jewish and African American communities before turning to the dire conditions faced by thousands of men living in downtown flophouses. It is here that Father Dempsey—newly appointed to the declining St. Patrick’s Parish—encounters the grim reality of homeless laborers dying in saloons, neglected and alone. Moved by their plight, Dempsey seeks Archbishop Glennon’s blessing to create a refuge “for men who wanted to be decent.” Within months he opens his first hotel for working men, greeting each guest at the door and offering clean beds, hot baths, reading rooms, and dignity for just ten cents a night. Demand quickly overwhelms the space, leading him to convert the abandoned Shield School into a second, larger home—soon known simply as Father Dempsey’s Home. As hundreds of men find shelter, work, and stability, Dempsey also ensures that those who die in his care receive proper burial at Calvary Cemetery in a section he names Exiles’ Rest, where he himself is later laid to rest.
