EP 3: Black History Spotlight: Nina Simone, The High Priestess of Soul
from Grow Your Money Podcast · host Constance Carter
BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: NINA SIMONE – THE HIGH PRIESTESS OF SOUL Today, we’re giving flowers to Nina Simone—the Pisces powerhouse who was bold, brilliant, and UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK! Fun Facts About Nina: Born Eunice Waymon, she changed her name to hide her club gigs from her church-going mama! Started playing piano at 3 years old and was a classical prodigy! Rejected from the Curtis Institute of Music because of racism—but they tried to give her an honorary degree LATER (Chile… ). Known as “The Civil Rights Diva,” she used her music to fight for Black liberation. Gave us “Mississippi Goddam,” “To Be Young, Gifted & Black,” and “Four Women”—songs that STILL hit today! Lived in Liberia for two years and had her ashes scattered across multiple African countries. She was an insomniac, smoked Kool cigarettes, wore mink coats, and demanded absolute silence while she performed. A whole vibe! Nina wasn’t just an artist—she was a movement. She was FEARLESS, RAW, and REFUSED to be silenced. She gave us music that wasn’t just for listening—it was for liberation. What’s your favorite Nina Simone song?
