They're singers, they're songwriters and they've all made their voices heard in their own way. Black women have always been at the vanguard of artistic innovation, and have always been natural spokespeople for the marginalized in any culture. The artistic vision and creative voices of the women I've chosen to highlight today mean that they  will forever have a place among the greats in music history. They've acted as a beacon for myself and countless artists who have chosen to make their voices heard in the arenas of activism and social justice.
