EP 325: Letting Life Be Our Teacher

from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns

‘Life is the curriculum’ - Jon Kabat-Zinn What this great teacher is telling us with these wise words is that throughout our lives we will be presented with situations that, while on their face are very challenging, are really opportunities to learn about ourselves. And of course, to practice being present, accepting, and compassionate. In today’s video, I tell a story about one such opportunity presented to me in an interaction with my 9-year-old son. This experience gave me the opportunity to notice the automatic parenting behavior driven by implicit memory that could have become another round in the cycle of generational trauma. Fortunately, I relied on my mindfulness training and instead created an opportunity to learn from an uncomfortable experience. The end result was the opposite of the trauma it could have become. The end result was compassion and healing and, ultimately, positive learning. Today’s video is a little long because I also talk about a new course I’m launching this week: How to Parent with Connection So Your Kids Can Thrive (And So Can You) In this course, we’ll train parents in mindfulness and emotional intelligence which many psychologists believe to be vital for child development.
