EP 326: The Vital Skill of Mindful Communication

from Showing Up To Life · host Art Burns

In any area of our lives - as parents or children, employer or employee, or in the most anonymous interactions in our daily lives - we are communicating. Communication is how we get what we need and request what we desire. It is how we express our love. So it stands to reason that of all the applications of mindfulness practices, mindful communication could be the most vital. The very word communication is derived from the word commune - to come together. As we bring non judging awareness to our words, our tone, facial and body expressions, we can see when we are pushing people away. And when we can see this, we can choose to instead draw them in. With practice, we are also able to develop empathy so we know how our verbal and physical expressions make others feel. This last point couldn’t be more vital to us as parents!!! Check out the video for some examples that will help you understand this important topic more deeply. And please reach out to learn some very simple practices that can help you communicate more mindfully and, as a result, more effectively.
