What sorry dribble the pre-see all over dribble my that's what you say. See it wasn't it didn't make sense That's why you have to you have to lay down something for me You can't hear my eyes roll but they're rolling Paul lay something down that I can comprehend like a chain a chain of meaning between You and me and then allow me to take control. Okay. Yeah, okay, right?
You do that thing again Like what when you talk you lean back from the mic. I have to adjust the levels and editing I'm not I'm just too loud. I'm riffing don't hold me down. Glues.
I'd say groups. I'm a don't hold me down Oh, yeah, well done. Thank you Any policeman's favorite band It's you and 99 let me have a new there you go job. All right, I'm in charge this week Which means we're doing to very familiar segments in the mirror world style.
How do you keep warm officer? I'm on the reverse No, even that's that you fuck that don't think too I'll buy it that's what did the policeman say to the person who just put a shirt on what you're under a vest good that I Fix that for sure not a vest doesn't know they kind of I made it no you don't want to say the word vest in the in the lead-up. Do you invested in this? Disinvest yourself of talking for a second.
Okay, you're in charge daddy. So we have two segments coming up in the show Paul today We don't which I will be the arbiter of Phil Wait, what I'm sorry. I'm sorry you're losing your credibility. I've got two segments.
Okay kill the energy as well You see This What's that smell Eli shit in the bed? I've told them there's two fucking segments I'm laughing aren't I right the first segment would be what's that smell what's that smell? It's Eli shit in the bed? I Won't be joining in with that song you want to though This show don't we right good true?
Wasn't she in the bed exactly which is sort of you know basically off-brand brand off Yeah, we're trying to get around because you will be doing the testing the blind taste testing today I will and then we got a test of that good well We're just about to get into that for but firstly it goes over my eyes I just room for the mouth and I have to say people he's already been at the product I just think it's right if I say that it is not what you're creating And honestly about your behavior your cheating behavior In the truth I'm allowed to tell me that you cheated let me just set up by this what you like about today is a 100% fucking horseshits I just put it up. It's fine is past us. It's what I'm gonna do a taste test And I mentioned Eli listen you better unwrap these because I don't want to accident I'll be tasting and then you like so you like so everyone I'm gonna get a twist this narrative to make me like daddy big dick Come on I mean it's one of my five years ago I have You have you have the rules and I'll be explaining the rules to you I will be playing that for 20 minutes. So what's it gonna be called silverman's or Eli's silverman's interlating?
Oh, you see sessions. No, it's not gonna work like that That's a word for games because of a lot of Eli's you see Eli's Entertainment's yes, okay, okay, Eli's excellent entertainment will be his edition of the board game part of the show or games in general Yes, so that's it that's your show. It's gonna happen whether you like it or not whether you like it or not it's happening So without in mind, let's just turn over. Let's go to the break ball.
Yeah, let's go to the break you like let's go to the break Let's go to the sound effect. Let's flip to the sound effect What's that smell what's that smell? It's a lie shit in the bed Brand off of brand brand off of brand brand off of brand brand off of brand brand brand brand brand Come on help me brand off of trying that to you for you. I'm willing to help you please come in after I've done that She comes brand off brand brand brand.
No, you see I'm off How was I do first let's just do it the regular way because I was just confusing you consider one we both grown adults here We can do we can take a phrase and reverse it in our heads. So what is it called brand off brand off brand off brand off brand off brand Is Brand off brand off Eli shit the bet right we're doing off brand off you I'm a taster you are the master taster this week Paul I am blindfolded and see if you can distinguish. Yeah, I'll be checking that well Let me just set up what the off brand off segment is first before we get into the meter Well, it's just about to say you lost you Am I the one who's doing the segment like the way that you know this? That's right Paul.
That's right. That's what you bit off to it You're just a gravy follow week swallow your own fucking agreement to do this push it down Yeah, so I push the shit off this segment. I always like it like my ball. I love it when you say shit like that now Yes off brand brand off is a segment of the show where we taste a branded product Alongside the off brand version often much cheaper one or even two off brand versions And it's for us to see if the person who's doing the test can actually tell the difference and has a skill in guessing Which is which because well as have an amplitude yes as well as I want you to use that term as well as well as a little consumer thing where we say whether it's actually worth getting the cheapest No, that's not It's not that's not gonna catch on just because I already has no just because I wanted to take part doesn't mean It can be done with you Paul shit in the bed.
Yeah, that's true Turn it around on you so look sometimes the only songs you come up with during this reverse episode one Okay, I'm in charge of that. I only copyright on that on Eli shit No, what's that now? What's the night? Yeah, I just do more of you which is talk Jesus Christ Now you can feel my role.
How am I doing now? It's okay? Do you want to do this fucking taste taste? I'm not my world of pain like you're not doing me You don't know Bobo Bosphopo Biscuit Bofo I mean I know I like it when you like that I love it.
I do that I'm in charge today, so I have to be sober sometimes the outcome can necessarily not This is gone. It's just you interrupted me when I was explaining it I was trying to say to me but sometimes the outcome isn't based on whether we can guess the proper brand But sometimes do we find another one preferable even better even for the price So sometimes the off-brand can be better and sometimes we can consider it to be actual battle value. Yeah, it's not that much worse Yeah, so sometimes they're quite different. Yeah, you know sometimes they have amazingly different profiles doing what they are I love sources you love sources everyone in 12 with this show in anyway, so love sources Paul They love the source they love this source that source distinguishing sources.
That's why we have the source report Which is our specialty news segment talking about source one bulletin just one bulletin from the source report Do do do do do do do do do so so can I just say something just it's not your segment if you're not doing it's my source report No, it's a HP's we're doing brown sauce. I'm just one of deliver Just let me for one second right deliver the news from the source report case one thing alright Do do do source report this week's brand off brand off will involve source. That is all that good right brand source Brown sauce is what we're gonna do today. We had three brands.
I just want to be a winner Swapshop reference like because what's the band from swap beef head? No, it's brown sauce I just saw so check wins face This does look like a kind of wrapped ham for the oven doesn't it What's that smell everyone what's that smell it e like it the bed? I'm not what's that color of the sauce that people It look like a bit probably yeah, it's brown sauce make HP is our on-brand sauce this week boy any thoughts about that house Stand for the Parliament. That's why the picture of the house is Parliament on the label.
I'm just were you today years old when you found that out I guess I just didn't put two into together. I just you Okay, that's how's the part no you're right? I totally agree, but I just never thought that HP You're like in the flavor like KP crisps. I thought it was something like that Oh look at HP source history well it is something like that as in it's the name of the food stuff with two letters in the name Yeah, I know you know what I give you a little kind of a loud I'm allowed to give you that any source based content is alright with maple okay HP source because I don't think it's brown sauce like this Is it anything else in the world bar the UK right no barbecue sauces thing which is very similar but just not called brown sauce in America They don't have a pan that stuff that they put on okay.
No, no fair enough, but I'm very similar bulldog sauce you see it that Japanese sort Okay, it's basically brown sauce. Okay, so I'm gonna be a star root based source I'm very unfastinated please so like most podcasts and we from Wikipedia HP source is a British brown sauce the main ingredients of which Are do I have a guess at what the two ingredients are it says here vinegar and sugar? They're probably in there, but it says here the major ones are tomatoes and tamarind extract Wow, okay, they're really thought about before I'm not found tamarind as we discovered on this podcast before you know There's candies that we got the tamarind one. Yes, I mean there is a hugely popular thing isn't it Tamarind?
It was named after the London's houses of Parliament click click you're right Yeah, after making its first appearance on British dinner tables in the late 19th century HP source went on to become an icon of British culture It was the best selling brand the brown sauce in the UK in 2005 was 73.8% of the retail market It's the Coca-Cola of brand sources. Can I just speculate here for one second port? I think it's to do with the colonies like India I think this is like comes from sources that they we can have a look at in a minute chutneys I think it's a sort of version of a sort of chutney relish right? I'm sure came from the Raj and the British interesting thing here the source was originally produced in the UK But now is made by finds in the Netherlands HP sources tomato based blended with malt vinegar and spirit vinegar sugar molasses So I got the second to I just didn't get this blind spot with the tomato I knew it was had some kind of fruit or vegetable in dates cornflower rye flour salt spices and tamarind it is used as a Condiment on hot or cold savory food.
Yeah, yeah and blah blah blah So the history Frederick Gibson Garten had a grossest and provisioned soppin Milton Street and knotting him He was given a recipe for a brown sauce by one of his supplies that had been obtained in India Yes, of course Yeah, use this recipe for the brown sauce in his pickles and sauce factory in New Bayes But Garten registered the name HP source in 1895 choosing it because he had a rumor that a restaurant in the house of the Parliament had begun serving it The source bottle labels code of picture that has a Parliament. Yes, this was by no means is only product He also made Nottingham source sand and sauce was to source banquet source Yorkshire source daddy's favorite source as well as garden and coins Indian chutney hang on too much information about So I'm fucking crazy there that list fucking what what do we know but look not in the source? hyperlinks no these sources are pages man. Yeah, I need the source of this source This profound Yorkshire sauce what the fuck is and also daddy's special did you say daddy's special?
Favorite Source for this at brankel daddy's well, this is what it says here So let me just condense these two paragraphs down he was in debt in 1899 He sold the right to HP source to a company to another company 450 quid at the time I was trying to do now, but he'd also need to keep out of the source and pickle business as a result of that deal I can't again add in the pickle business. I sell you deals, but you're out of the pickle business. Yeah, you're out the pickle business for life You're no longer a chutney man. Oh Oh the chutney man man boy, I'm only doing pickles all time The name of Garten remained on the bottle of HP source many years afterwards, but it was the Midland vinegar company Which again Today HP and daddy's are the two most popular brown sources and they can raise their origins back to a tiny premise in Nottingham show I'm just click on that He's that's where me was daddy special source a type of source because now it's just a brand and they do you see well Look it says here the brown source product known as daddy's when spoiler one we're gonna have a daddy's on today daddy's source was launched in 1904 And the ketchup was launched in 1930 so their brown source came first for daddy's ketchup The brand is owned by H by Hines It was bought as a part of an acquisition in 1899 Edwin Samsung more the owner of the middle of the middle of the company in Birmingham Went to see one of his customers who owned a debt That's the guy who invented HP source and then the man was Frederick yeah Frederick Gibson got normally just spoke to and he bought HP source often Then launched daddy's as part of his own company Okay, so that's where daddy's comes from as a way to do is own take on the swine's their histories and twine together And also interesting that daddy's designed by Hines now.
Yeah, so it's competing with itself now It's HP and Hines products. Yes, it is now with my Netherlands So yeah, these two are the same tweed is like finding out coco's Pepsi now What would you say would be the difference between these two products off the top of my head from to daddy's is sweeter Ah, shall we just get into the sauce? So we've got those two which are the two big brands which is more expensive the HP HP considerably I think that's more bottle and what much is that way sorry? Does it say size is 285 grams?
So that was about two pounds something or other in Morrison's and then that was one 99 that was 199 so less money And actually been more and then there was another one. This is the Morrison's own brand. Yes, so we got the off-brand Brown sauce and I think that was 150 that's the cheapest of a lot. Yeah, and you get 450 grams and like everything We've done off-brand brand off before visually to the eye.
They're very similar brown sauce plastic bottle like blue navy blue black writing Then fonts. Okay, so we those are the sources you'll be tasting Paul you have some cracker there and three separate spoons I'm gonna be writing this down and I'll number all the sources excellent They will go for it. So this is brand off brand off off off I'm gonna don my mask of mystery. I'm gonna get right onto the sauce tasting right after this little nugget of sound I have donned the mask now the only reason you're keeping the mask on Paul is because there is there is a considerably noticeable Difference in the consistency on the spoon and the color of these three sources.
Okay, is that yes? I wouldn't thought there would have been much of a color difference. No, there is Okay, yeah, which we can discuss after you've done your okay course today So don't don't forget to ask me that fair enough that before you leave I will do I've also close my little book I'm checking out over here Just sit there in darkness in fear of me coming over and put my bum on your finger or something right? That's what I do That's what I put up with it's a hard job.
Yeah, get used to it. This is what's that smell? It's you like shit in the bed. I'm not shitting the bed sound like you lose a control No, it's because you'll be so subordinate.
I'm I sound cool and calm. Oh, you sound like a wobbly meltdown You're so cool. Oh, right shut up I have closed the book which has the secret code. I have numbered spoons here.
Okay, three numbered spoons now I want full notes and I'm ready to handle your first spoon which will be spoon number one which I have written down what that is Are you ready for spoon number one? Are you ready for spoon number one? I'm ready right? I'm ready.
Yeah, I'm coming over He's gonna deliver a spoon with the first of the brown sources to my hand which way are you coming? I don't know what's going on? I don't like it This one doesn't matter whatever your nearest to give me that Rest it on the finger and I'll clamp it with my thumb. No, I don't want you feeding me.
No. I'm not having you feed me Just put it. Let's put the spoon in my hand. Got it.
All right, it's a lot on there Okay, I'm gonna have a I'm having a sniff sniff that is spoon number one now right now. What's the sniff sniff? It sounds very familiar. We talk about amplitude.
We talk about that specific collection of spices and flavors that are Indelibly the recognizable brand you're looking for right so right now what you're getting right now This is this as well as like a TV, but it's also slightly sweeter to my nose, but let's just go Hey, there's a bit. There's you notice picking up something maybe divergent from HP there Yes, so I'm just gonna go in dive in and get the whole spoon in my mouth a lot of it's a lot of brown sauce by that I want you to be fair, you know, mmm Right now this comes as close as master cake. I am I got very jolly then right now this reads as close but no cigar So I would say okay, what's the what's the nose cigar? Well, it's like it's the texture cigar the texture is wrong Okay, which what's your and a slightly kind of sweeter after taste than I usually expect from a HP?
So right now based on this alone, I would say it's not the HP, but it's very very close if it wasn't I wouldn't be too Okay, it's very hard to say when you just had the one source. Yeah, obviously we all know this pool so put the spoon down there good Spoon down. Yeah, but good notes when you say that the sweetness is is strong stronger than you might expect from a Just like an artificial sweetener to flavor. No, it's more like with a HP in my mind's eye a HP is kind of a darker flavor Okay, it's a kind of a more burns almost flavor.
Would you like a little sip of water? Yes, please clean the palate before the second Give me water I'm not really I'm blindfolded and you'll come at me at all angles. I don't know where the microphone is to its sunshine Welcome to the big leagues kick out kid. Oh god.
Okay. No shit. Oh, he loves you in the birdie is That's the water everyone. He's not taking anything.
He's cleaning his mouth out. Don't spit it swallow. He's googling. Oh hilarious It's like watching a young Charlie Chaplin the inventiveness the physical play just renting my mouth out It will be no laughter.
Yeah, that's a good intro. Now. Are you ready? Yes?
Give me the second of the spoons You are ready for spoon number two. Oh god, please. I'm coming around there to give you spoon number two He's come around there come around here hands out again before rest it in your finger They thumb will clamped out picture. Why do you put so much on there?
Well, you need some pennies worth is Right. Okay. Yeah, right. Okay.
Strangely not as strong. This one. No, it's not as volatile not as much nose No, it's kind of a quite muted almost. Okay, still familiar like spices there I recognize but of a brown sauce but not as a not as an obvious honk right going for the taste It's lots wrong with that.
What's wrong with it? Wouldn't be it wouldn't be all without a little bit of a gag. It's super sweet super super sweet Sweet and then number one yes considerably almost like the front and the back is sweet and there's a little bit of the Brand in the middle right, you know, it's weird So sweet on the front and then really sweet and after yeah, I'm very kind of gelatinous almost as well Okay, the texture was gelatinous until I get the third one I can't really rank them but at the moment this kind of reads like it's daddy's But I think this is just more ketchup piece So from the second what would you say the first one was I would say HP based on the first one was HP the second I was daddy's just as a preliminary guess yeah Yeah, and what makes you say that so what you're thinking that because of the sweetness of that second one Yeah, make the first one in my mind go a lot darker a flavor than what I've got right now This one is either the daddy's or the knockoff HP. Okay.
Well, you need to know you have to have all three All three before so basically one of these is a lot cheaper than the other two Yeah, certainly by that spoonful that fell and of course we know daddy's an HP They're probably not manufactured in the same place, but they're Well, yeah, well, yeah back then I mean, it's you know, what are they using to find the difference between in their mind? I keep saying mine that's boring, but when they get together do they go? What's makes daddy's different? How do we sell it where it's not brown sauce?
Who knows what the evil evil men get up to in their rooms? Give me the final one They might give me some context for the overall coming round with competition. Okay, he's gonna spoon it in right All it's time for spoon number three three smell that spoon. That's this smells very vinegary this one very vinegary then it very vinegary I would say this one so I can tell you this obviously a recognizable brown sauce then going on but very vinegary here we go Oh fuck You like brown sauce yeah, but first of all about three big dollops of it Yeah, and that's quite a lot to say because I didn't realize how gelatinous hate for you was we mean brown sauce.
Yes Oh, yeah, which one of those was no no no no, but I'm just saying you know, I don't I don't I don't you think it's thicker than ketchup It's not the same. It's probably the same. I just didn't really you know you put it on something You don't think about texture because it kind of just out I mean if you think about it is basically a type of ketchup Isn't it it's mainly ingredients to my yeah? Yeah, but yeah, that's just a yes.
Okay, so I'm gonna say okay What were the other finish your notes on spoon number three, please? It was just had a gelatinous texture you were saying I think the first one was HP right on reflection now And I it's a toss up now between which one I think is the daddy's of the last two on which I think is the First one was the HP just because in my head it was closest to it what you think HP should taste like yeah Apart from like I get it's different when you have it without the context of the chip to dip it in or something You know so I would say first is HP But I would say the last two are interchangeable in terms of their profiles So it could easily be you gave me daddy's just them and the morrisons in the middle in the middle so I'm kind I mean look which did you prefer what was your favorite of all three sources? Let's say before you make your final guess probably the first one that was your favorite. Yeah, okay off the back Of a spoon in terms of it had the best amplitude you said it had an amplitude didn't you say yeah?
Everything was in balance not too sweet or sour with the spice difficult because we're doing this out of context of it with a meal with chips or Chops or whatever, you know and that's not the profile isn't it? So what I'm suggesting to you is that Maybe I'd have an easier time if it was on the side of a plate with some chips I could dip it into my brain Receptual fire off differently was any significant difference in texture between all three no all three had a very similar texture But the difference was like the sweetness hmm and like the first one wasn't as sweet as the other two I think the second one was the sweeter's why I'm thinking that's daddies okay and that last one was morrisons because it was the Closest to the first in flavor but still had this weird tangy sweet after the flavor thing going on I'm gonna lock that in you want to lock that in another one eight just to get this right you think number one was HP Yeah, number two was daddy's yeah number three was morrisons. Yeah, I'm gonna go that way. Yeah, okay Yeah, I'm taking it off.
Oh, it's all bright. Yes, I'm sweating so bright now Paul Yeah, number one yeah, I can say now to you had the lightest color It was almost yellow rather than the sort of darker okay darker brown to me the first one was very kind of chocolate moose Color like thought it was quite brown. Yeah, what do you mean? I know when I looked at front of the hat well It's yellow.
I can tell you I've had them all very much yellow and you said that was the HP you thought that was the What do I bet this is not gonna be the morrisons go on it is the Morrison's how funny now, but two yeah You thought was daddy's was daddy's and you said that would you say that was your least favorite? That was a super sweet one. Hey, you jokey. How fascinating that that was the HP I think this is a trend the big brands the one they give you the See this is the thing the last one was definitely like the sweetest it was the second was like the tarts sweeter's So it's more intense so it's a bit better no the first one's still the best I still stand by the Morissons was the smokiest and the less sweet and just in terms of color the daddy's the last one was sort of in between Darkness between the Morrison's which was the lightest and HP which I don't mind getting that wrong because that in many respects has made me think oh Look the Morrison's knock on that.
This is the kind of result. We're looking for here on brand off of brand We're looking for the best value and for your money the knockoff which is much much cheaper. Yeah, it's just as good Yeah, the branded HP genuinely. Yeah, it's kind of interesting that the daddies was at the bottom because I would kind of say the daddies was the worst one Yeah, okay, fine how interesting the daddies is the worst one But it's if you look at the it through the lens of them both being owned by Heinz Yeah, and we were talking about the decisions they make hmm HP's look at what they look as the more premium or you know But it looks like a sweet they've overly sweet they've overly sweetened it or something maybe because whatever they've got in the Morissons one both those you said were too sweet and the Morrison's was the lack of Sweetness which you liked can I have the Morrison's one just on the bottom?
I want to put it on the finger put it on your finger and then put some on the tip of it your finger once you've got the tip on Yeah, I like to do he's retasting a bit. Yeah, even with the other two memory now that is a less sweet thing. Yeah, it's much nicer Good, this is a great result. So you want to save money go for the off-brand at least in Morrison's We don't know about yeah, we don't test goes maybe or say to me I couldn't find a test goes off-brand thing Yeah, so but definitely not forking out.
You're just forking out for the the design of the nostalgia and the little royal seal that has On HP. Yeah, I think the last one I had was the worst one the daddy's yeah, well I'm pleasantly surprised by that I wasn't like out to kind of guess which one was the acrobaton But I would want to do it this way where I go which one was the actual objectively No, but it's not easy because you have just you don't think about when you have sauce on a meal Mmm, you don't think oh, this is HP. This is that you don't really it's not in your conscious mind That they take the difference between these things so it's quite hard just to go in which is a problem when I play the game Yeah, I often have with things it's like I don't know what I expect the differences or although Yeah, what the differences are surprising in and of themselves. Yes.
Yes. Well, well wonderful I'm actually reasonably quite interesting segments of the off-brand off-brand off-brand off-brand off-brand off Eli's exciting entertainment follows this short break. I can't wait for that go on for the button Well Paul it's time now for a little thing. I like to call Eli's excellent entertainment I have to call I have to call time on this you can't because this is my interpretation of your dog shit fucking brain Please improve it.
No bidle-de-diddle-dees. Okay. All right This is multi-fimmies come on rhythm and here I am a dairy. I do this Oh, I got it.
Oh, I got it. Oh, it's like excellent entertainment Entertainment One two one two wheel full down. Thank you. Yes, it's excellent entertainment Yeah, I'm on it baby What have you got?
I bought a board game. Oh, you bought a board game did you? Yes, with your say so it has to be said yeah I said you a little picture. Yeah, I was like get that I was in a charity shop in country Which is an accidentally curated charity shop.
There's a few nice ones around there actually I'm really can't remember. It's got really I should remember the name. I want to say like Octavius. It's all No, it is it's Octavius.
It's Octavius Charities, yeah, it is yeah, yeah, there's one in Kentish town as well. There's one up the road. No, I know that exists But I don't think this one is one anyway, but the road from the clock towel though, right? It's the furthest away from the clock.
Yeah, I think there's Octavius or it's gonna be a All aboard maybe it's not all aboard. Oh, hey, it's not all aboard. I'm sorry. I can't remember But they also have awesome stuff there usually and this was behind the glass.
They knew this was a good object Yeah, ten pounds, but no, it's not bad because I've seen it incomplete going online on eBay for a little less Right and completes that is a little more than a tenor. So actually for a charity shop for tenor is actually a really fair price It's a less complete and cheaper and complete and more expensive. Okay. Well, I don't really know about the pricing on board games And that's what market is this was by strawberry fair which is fair now.
That's fascinating to me. It's got a lovely smile in strawberry logo And it's a subsidiary of the company. What does it say? Denny Fisher?
Yes, it's a strawberry fair by Denny Fisher You know, the font of strawberry fairs very much in that love is kind of fun 70s, so we've had a few of their games on the fall in the past and we've never really talked about strawberry fair now to be fair There's not much to talk about strawberry fair to be fair, but who's Denny Fisher? Denny Fisher is a British Well, ah see I was like oh who is it because you're right? It's a subsidiary of straw strawberry fairs of subsidiary by It says by Denny Fisher, which is a toys which is like a you know like a fashion designer by you know Well, it's a personal name. Denny Fisher person who was born in Leeds in 1918 basically started out making He was an engineer.
He was an engineer. He was into engineering and he worked into it and it's company initially worked with NATO to supply springs And precision components for its cannons. Oh, but at some point they started developing drawing machines from a car No, and eventually what made any Fisher's name was the spy graph. He invented the spy graph now That's a famous toy, isn't it?
Yeah, and he sold that to Kenner in the US But it was called the toy the year in 1967 after that it went on to create toys and board games and strawberry fair was its board game subsidiary division But specifically focused on licenses of TV shows and so for example, we've got dad's army here They have are you being served on the boss's dad's army? It's a knockout generation game which we played last year on the fastest board game Yeah, Tom Baker's doctor who's six million dollar man. Tom Baker's doctor who board game specifically? Yeah, I'm era What was emu game, but I know what that is.
It's like a emu head rotating on the spot You go flick tiddly wings into its mouth. Okay. Yeah, more common wise Daleks and a multi-coloured swap shop game which I do want to get my hands on it So these probably more expensive than dad's army I mean some of those are more desirable they're quite rare and quite niche in terms of who wants them So the complete set is more valuable to some dickhead like me who wants a dad's army board game Well, Paul I've had a little look at the rules to this and it is a complete set like it's nice It's not a great condition, but utterly playable. Yeah, I mean it's a bit bad That's fine and the pieces of this at all it matters.
So that's them now. We have to what dad's army for people outside the UK You might know I've been fearing this. You know what? There's nothing wrong with dad's army I'm not saying anything wrong with it.
That's army is a sitcom based on the idea because that's on the real thing in this country The idea was all the ex soldiers and things who were too old to fight in the sector editorial army territory with army It's the volunteer home force They were nicknamed dads army because it was mostly you know Oh, well a gentleman did serve their time at all the wars at the ball war the first world war and things like that as far as I Remember I'd seen to remember that Crofton Perry who the writers of dads army the sitcom ran from July 31st 1968 and its last episode was 1977 9 series 80 episodes and a feature film and a stage show and a radio version based on the TV scripts was produced at its highest Audience numbers were 18 million people. Wow. Yeah, it was huge and they were re when I was at boarding school in the 80s They were rerunning it every week and Paul I have to say it used to come up and my heart would sink Why the true dullness of it perhaps it would appeal to me more now as an adult. Okay, but as a teenager No phone off the teenager.
Wow. Do you want to watch that? It's really it's the epitome of cozy stick coffee Just watch it and just he can't it does not involve in any ways. It's just it's but it's sort of broad isn't it?
But if you're an interesting show conceptually because effectively what it's about is men who are past their prime who have moved Onto bill of things like the excitement of youth sitting in the army having those medals or having those experiences good or bad You know what kind of yes and then seeing what happens to those people as they get older And when the second world war rolls around how they try and find their place again to be of use and it's a kind of power structure Yeah, it's about like oh well now we're living like these dual life now. We get to have army regiment structure now But what I've heard though, it's the main to pike and man wearing man wearing wearing yes Who are sort of more fleshed out as characters more sort of funny at the center and the others are sort of kind of types It's it's how it can I haven't seen very much at all I have to say when I was a teenager But I'm just like so bored but effectively it's like it's almost like a show about job worth Yes, you know because most of the man wearing runs a bank if I remember yes, but he's it's a class thing as well It's class play basically what showing is in this regiment this dad's army regiment how it reflects British Slightly those times like the spiv the guy always on the make that's right the old guys on the make isn't it? As well as spiv the young guys who young to fight who joins because that's what you can do Yeah, you see what I mean some of those characters are more sort of one line then those the central ones parking I mean, I think I had a main cast of all like eight ten characters or whatever They must have had something because it's hugely popular, wasn't it? Yeah, anyhow we've got the ball game here Oh, well interestingly originally the show is gonna be called the fighting tigers That's on was partly based on co-writer and creator Jimmy Perry's experiences in the local defense volunteers Which is like known as the home guard and highlighted the somewhat forgotten aspect of defense during the second world war Perry was only 17 years old when he joined the 10th Hertfordshire battalion his mother did not like him being out at night and feared He might catch cold and that inspired private pike.
It was the mothers the mothers. Yeah, I'm sleeping with his mom as well one of the other characters so yeah, again It has been a while for me It's all those interplays and look like going into too much detail about the sitcom itself You know it quite rightly has owned it's right is one of the great I should have another look and I don't know It was always in that same category as you know last of the summer wine just something I couldn't tolerate it at all now. It's yeah, I would say it's better than that You know cuz it's got I mean look what else did you be perry right? He also wrote it ain't our hot mom?
Is that the one with Windsor Davis? That young guy who did the ring-grass. Am I right? Yeah, right?
I mean that's the thing we haven't touched on yet. That sitcom any album that came from that show What's that when I made JPPY that had him? That was a sitcom in the 18th of our hospital. That's always on only when I laugh yeah But they went on to do Heidi high as well.
They're like our hot mom. Heidi high you're right. You're right. I'm sorry.
I'm sorry I just don't care for their work very much. No, that's understandable. I'm sorry. Oh God.
Hi. It's bring back So it's the boredom Paul. It's this supernatural level of boredom Interesting scry David Croft went on to do a low low which is I just can't stand. Oh God hello.
Hello. Anyhow should we play the game? It's doing my edit before we introduce the game. I thought I got to play the theme and the theme is quite important part of the show Because you know the theme from that's all you Yeah, yeah, it was iconic though, but it's an interesting song.
I'll tell you for why when you listen to it It sounds like it came from the period right sounds like it was a song that people sang around the old Joanna Do you understand? It was not it was written for the sitcom cool. It was brand new written by I think Jimmy Croft wrote it with that's a classy thing to do It's a good thing. I agree But it was sung by both Flanagan who was a guy who was famous for singing those war songs in the day It was really old when you recorded this song and all the last things he did in his career, right?
And so like his authenticity sells the concept. It totally does it's good It's a good thing because it's also a major sick comment any respects because it was made in the 60s But it's about the 1930s early 1940s. It's got a black out of field where it's like it's ages because it's always set at a different time Yes, so you think that helps something to be ageless when it's I think so I think in some sitcoms cases when it's a period piece It kind of helps because it takes it out too much takes it out of the dated being able to date Yeah, it's not for the least on as a single in 1969 and be released in 1975 Jesus How much longer is this talking about dad's army bit gonna go on Paul? But I'm gonna use to be part of the crazy gang Whoo dad's army whoo everyone he lies excellent entertainment bit of a dance grid for the first episode of it Well, you are on talented con to that make oh, I was I don't know what a sensing a little undeserved insult from mean uncle Paul Who do you think you are getting mister?
What is it mister Hitler so don't fucking start this shit with me Press the button you know what else but Flanagan's our soul bound in the popping windows The board game I'm gonna have you at this all right No, let's have fun and you'll be listening to the rules from me Yeah, we're gonna play the rules between ourselves now and then when we come back We're gonna die straight to the game and as we play all right you guys excellent entertain them who do you think you are kidding Eli Silver me if you think you shot the bed I've got a great big piece of finger sausage in my old aunties and 0 What's that smell what's that smell? It's Eli shit the bed come on what's that smell what's that smell? It's Eli shit the bed? I have you know Right we have gone through the rules the okay the rules well fine working out as we go now effectively Just to break down what we're playing because obviously you can't see it I'm not filming this but there will be pictures of the board game on our website the future of color UK effectively the idea of the Game is you play a pair of characters from the dad's army stable of characters and then the idea is you got to go to a top secret base And then find your marker mark is to call the reference marker which we've randomly well It's gonna get to that and so basically that's your end goal and that's random depending on each version of the game You play and that is determined by picking out some random cards which tell you how across the board you go west and then north It's a grid it's not a grid so my my piece is on 10 Seven and I'm on what my own what what was I read read your seven three black seven red Yeah, the pink the red cards have gone pink though Paul over time Yeah, so when you go to you've got it You've got to start with your character lives on the board and then head to a w the top secret get a card action that card And then you've got the head both men We should say both men but you play as a team an individual plays to me two characters Yeah, so you've got the yellow and yellow who are they for which were to Fraser?
Who's a Scottish man? Oh, hi. He's a funeral guy. He's the one who went with doom.
So he's stingy So that's why I know if it's a bit of a stereotype. I personally don't remember if he's a character He's a depressive more than a girl. Okay. He's like the ear'sable.
Yeah, he's the ear if my wearing is when he's a poo right and piglet is Wilson Yeah, then he's probably ill and who is Pike Pike in the you started this who tried in the winnie the poo you maybe he is Robin maybe yeah, Chris Robin This is mainly maybe room utterly meaning you are this is this is pure spew from you anyway You're just trying to say something like that second character. Pike. He was a famous one Right no Pike was the young guy with the famous don't tell him your name whose mom's getting screwed by one of the others Well, son, though, right that's a sort of so that's a bit sick on me is I mean so bopery is it a bit? I don't know.
I'm really not really no not really. Can you put him back at where does he go? Pike's mom's up Pike's mom's up very good. Yeah, right and your character what you said about what the writer was saying That's sort of like the autobiographical character.
Yeah, he was to young's join the army So he was in the comb guard would you say that some of the scripts are sort of written as if pikes experiencing It's big off ensemble that every episode could focus on a different character But usually man wearing and Wilson all the other one. Okay. Anyway, so we've got one there start where you live You've got them who I got I don't know you tell me you read characters. Yes, there's a pair of blue pair of green Peri yellow pair of red.
I've got called Joe's I'm playing red. So Joe's is the one who goes They don't like it up them. That's a famous line, isn't it? He was famous.
What's he referring to a bayonet tip? I'm gonna let you finish a fucking sentence before you just launch in with more of your fucking brain clap come on Just say it finish saying what you were saying barely get two fucking words out and you've jumped in with more fucking I wasn't I was saying something on the point there. Please continue I can I will say it enough to you know you've sold it. I'm not soured it.
What's that smell? What's that smell Eli? Shat the show. I haven't got a show.
Stop sitting back there like a fucking write off. You look like a contented bears Miracas right I've got one now you talk we were talking about this character corporal Jones is the I was gonna say he was a guy who the actor was really was in his 40s But he meant to be playing again in seven days and he also released granddad, you know that song granddad We've done Clive done yeah I'm only playing an old man for all of his life until he was old enough to play that real old man for real we're trapped in that Character almost anyway the next character what I want to say is what's your favorite? Do you don't like a mother playing it? Yeah, that's not very nice to be fair.
No one likes a bayonet up the Are they don't like it up and not no one does yes? Do you know someone who does what I can see someone who have a fetish for having it? But it would be a real bayonet be some kind of build up. Yeah, it would be a massive deal done in your way fantasy Yeah, but in reality it would be a terrible way to die to be stabbed at the bayonet up your arsehole That's what I mean.
That's what I'm trying to say. I don't know why he found that funny. I don't like anyone laughs exactly That's what I'm trying to get at Paul. That's the way that always struck me is that it's a great fucking line Yeah, it's like it's quite gruesome line isn't it gruesome?
Yeah, so your other character is Pike No, who like I know Pike Godfrey Godfrey is the old man the very oldest of the group is your a little bit kind of gone in the air Okay, oh, he's a bit grumpy sessions. Oh, okay now I want you to do impressions when we make every move yes, I will and And then we've got one character who is in black that character is the airway rod sorry Hodges Yeah, and it was the whole gimmick with him as he was a miserable prick and it was telling everyone to turn their lights out at night because obviously to the village lights out join an air raid because you don't want the Squadron flying over the next audience to drop it on your bill. So I like right that was the job's worth He was a job's worth. Okay, you ready to start?
Yes. Okay, who goes first? No who goes second? What's on first now?
You're skating there. Okay, so you have to go to a WD top secret thing play a card go home simple as that Let's just let's just see how this rolls. Let's begin You Mr. Brown goes off to turn on the 821 but he comes on each evening and he's ready with his gun Right, I'll let you go first.
I'm gonna roll two dice two dice, but you don't even move one character on that two dice You're trying to get to my reference points reference marker, which is the red one, right? Yeah, I have to visit this over yeah Three three so which one you're gonna move he's moving always moving one of his red characters. He's moving old man God free The map looks like a little village by the way Just say once you roll now like a little village with little houses and shelters because apparently everyone's wish out Of the day right? Oh, I'm gonna get to it.
Oh, right. He's got six twelve snake eyes. That's not snake eyes. No poor No, it's either eyes.
It's not spider eyes. I've ate twelve eyes spider eyes spider eyes spider eyes do not have twelve eyes Hey guys spider eyes two spiders spider eyes I would like you to move. You want to move. I'm gonna get up and do it myself So bear with me.
It's on the sofa here the board the playing board Yes, you are the yellow players You can you have to go more though, don't you? You have to move seven you have to move seven so you need to get into a house I have to be on your seventh move. Yes on your fifth or fourth ago similar to the getting the end pie in trivia pursuit It's not moving pike. He's got to move twelve spaces.
No, no going back. He's moved all the way around there I should have picked up me route better to be fair. Okay Now I just you just have to visit once that's all yeah, okay. I have a tooth say guys.
We're spider eyes No shut up. I actually did double six. I've done double one which is snake eyes. He's done a big two I've done a number two.
I'm gonna move you two. Okay. Who's he moving which one he's got? I always gone straight in so turn the card over WD top secret.
I've got gone free into my top secret Yeah, what the WD stand for water closet now it's WD war department all department. I know pick a car Don't shuffle him. We should have already see car now So he's pulled out a union jack which now means he rolls a dice and the number of that dice is the one dice He has to pick up a certain number of union jack cards. That's the dice.
Yes, we roll a dice No two dice it doesn't say roll the die does it so to the dice they roll a dice and get that number of flags That makes more sense to have fewer if you had too many rooms the game. That's just conjecture the rules of weirdly very Very weird. I've got six anyway. I'm good.
So now he has to pick out six union jack cards Now it's time for these wedges just like the credits of dad's army I think that's quite a smart move because that's something that they'd visually visually associate with dad's army That's the thing is because you can't get the humor of the game into the TV show into the game You can do the iconography the iconography Yeah, please because you put it away over there out the way for no fucking reason on the fact that you're bad Oh, come on mate. I'm giving you six of these No, I have to move I have to put these on the board No, I just save them I say save them for when the other day Right because you've got so when the air raid happens there are bombs that drop and you can use the flags to cover up the bomb All's that I left like God. Yes for he's he's rolled a four. Who's he gonna move?
Who's he gonna move? Who's gonna move? Who's gonna move? Who's gonna move?
He's gonna move Pike or The old one they're all old. I don't know. It's very boring, isn't it? Well, yeah, oh, he's in a WD top-seep with WD mango spruce It's picking a WD top-seep a card.
It's also a union jack like rolled one dies for the union jack for please You've got four union jacks. I'm dishing out union jacks triangles like they're going out business You go my friends. There's no this you know what's quite refreshing about this no money is there this guy no cash No, no cash. No money.
It's just it's quite refreshing. It's actually now I think of it how many game ball games have money in it like sometimes even games that you don't think deserve money Just put it in don't they? Reach them Around the rooms get the dice I think it's an unwanted level of aggression from you. Oh, yeah, we've done five minutes I've got nine who do you want to move?
You got nine? You've moved to yellow character on the other ones you're red Say the impression they don't like it up them Move nine please for a kid up right nine might go is your double dice digit ish nine You also roll the night headphones over You also roll the night boy who you gonna move who you gonna move you're gonna go to a WD and listen He's in the WD top secret. I pick a card pick a card. It's more Union Jack.
I'll be shuffled Three Union Jacks already two two Union Jacks, please. Okay. Oh more union Jacks. We're gonna run out of Union Jacks Yeah, and then they just do nothing.
I guess yeah It's a slightly vague isn't it anyway, I rolled a four so I don't have to know you only have to visit once. No, I know what you have two guys So yeah, we'll have to visit them both no as a team you only have to visit once really yes Well, then I wouldn't have made the effort to go all the way out you should have listened to the rules I only just found that rule out well now you're finding out how many do I roll for so now? You're just heading to your marker. I'm trying to get to my mark about no you don't go in the cup bowl That's not a space.
It's not it's not it's not a space if your markers there otherwise. It's just not on the path Otherwise you just walk across one Told you you can go well What's the fucking point of anything on this board then you just can't go in a building side by the wall Wait, is it one of these things when you roll two dice if you move two you move two in one direction and five in another? No, Paul. What's going on?
I'm stuck to pull I was moving along the path shut up you may only go at the building entrance You may move anywhere on the board even across country or into the sea I read that to you before you said Oh look can I go across the wire here? What's the point of segmenting a pathway up into squares because it's just be drawn free and it could be anything I don't know why you can play about this now. You're just trying to run the clock down I know who's goes it your goes your goes to roll these behind that's what's getting anxiety Are you gonna move? Door there you fucking moron stop with this Some parts of the game do have rules and some part of the game is fucking free to all We walk over the way of your dick man, but no, I wouldn't have walked around the pathway It looks like you're meant to walk around the pathway So now the games over because I need to go to a foot anymore to a no more dangers so these fucking flags are police I got pride down home to my reference point.
All right good take him off the ball But now all these flags are useless because we can't go to any more fucking there's no point going to anymore No, there is you use it as see if you've got something good to fuck me up That's what you meant to do. There's no point because look how fucking easy it is just to get home such sour grapes This probably works better with more plays If there's more people playing this makes sense because more people are going to these little red hooks to get cards So he went along the pathway Why didn't you go through the grass because there's no point because you can't move diagonally? Can't you basically can't get basic no no What you've got on the grass with those two moves Sake my go fuck this I hate this game. I actually hate it because I think we're two people it's almost unplayable Why what's it because I said you said you said you just said to me if there was more people playing to be more red cars And play which means more bombs more characters more swaps things The fact that you just go to it once and they go straight to your marker kind of means like as we've just only pulled out flags There's no elements of danger.
There's no risk. No, no chicken to go around. I know so it's a particularly poor showing six I can't go through those buildings. No, because they're buildings aren't they you can't do that Right, how much did you run?
I've got ten good. All right, you're going into another fucking horse pull a red card out I've got it's not hot. It's a wall. Did whatever.
It's a bloody top secret card mate. Okay. Tell you what about this game I don't like it up to me What's that mean if you guys are you I get to move you I'll get to move you roll me now and then move me because you pulled That's the mind advantage if you hadn't pulled a character that I was you just move around them character Yeah, but with no point because no else is playing that seems to be an oversight people Do not like that does seem to be an oversight. Yeah, so I've got six.
I can move. Where are you? I am where's Fraser. Yeah, move it away from my yellow marker.
It's just sore everybody seven Anyway, you should go get card to try and fuck me up. Well, I better strategy eight my go go Seven again seven is the most likely outcome there. I think Matthew you're not gonna be able to get in there I Pause my having any money after this without a minute seem like a year. Yeah I think a lot fun everybody roll the dice, please.
Oh, I'm loving it. Oh, double six. Why don't you fuck off and die? My go nine Do something different man.
Yeah, then you get to if you get to there you got one man. Yeah, well, I won't I have the dice please Sorry Oh Oh, it's shit. This isn't it Just move 10 to my only one more time they can even out He's got one man home One more time I'll roll one more time game over he's happy now is that not actually happy 10 11 11 I wouldn't move Maybe too close right Okay, that was my last round I'm within three spaces of home with my last name five We didn't get any air raids. That's lucky, isn't it?
You can't get I don't try cheat now You can but you don't even know where you were now watch this. He's gonna try to say it's one now Well, you're closer. So there you go. You won you are there you are you won I won yeah, did I so you got really win?
You finished with Fraser closer than I've got all right, so there you go. How many flags did you go three four five six Oh, you were closer. Oh, I think again Then closing thoughts on the game pool. Here's what I think what's that smell what's that smell Eli shot the pod Oh, I think that game would be better with another player and I think I'm gonna play the rules somewhat And ultimately if I had to give this board game a rating based solely on its existence outside of the dad's army license I would probably say it's probably about a six with a bit of refinement you couldn't make an interesting game out of this But the rules as they stand now they're not clear enough are they they don't really allow us a two-player game a lot of chance a lot You know, there's there's no hang on hang on a second because it says for two three or four players But there's only three teams and hodges you must be able to play as hodges I thought you had to move around the board that must be that must be a different game That's not it well, there's a hodge card in that pile, right?
Yeah, unless you get to it that's characters pointless. Yeah, and if you're not another character on the board They're most important moving them around yeah, yeah, so there would be more sense if you pull a car There's man wearing you have to swap with man wearing space on the board Yeah, or Hodges moves around the board separately gets in your way dare I say it feels a bit rushed out mate like the more common wise board game that came out It's basically like a matching game. You know, I can turn cards over you to match this. That's it So yeah, a lot of these are worse up look it's probably better than the breadboard game Oh anything's better than that, but with the bit of a fire mint.
It's not too bad nicely put together It's nice to be the artwork on the board. I like design is fine. Yeah, I quite like this sort of simple design of the card based You know, it's not yeah, I know that the game is based around some kind of maneuvers role play practice thing Yeah, so it's not on theme So there's some thought been put into the design but it doesn't seem like you say to have been followed through to It's like the game to be based on the idea of like a war game scenario Like a daffa little one where you have to play the thing and you'll be off to play the people in your town You have to do XYZ and then get to your location as it stands nice try Yeah, not good enough. But the rules were not clear enough where they're in some places.
No, they don't like it up them do they No That's all for this segment of the show You have been listening to cheap show I've been Paul Gannon I've been a nice old man I was in charge today you were badly and you shot the pod Hey, look if you want anything else on this podcast of your brain go to the website the teacher Go UK also patreon.com forward slash cheap joke if you want support this part and remember give what you can but only if you can Thank you Twitter as well the podcast is at the cheap show pod and Eli's account is called Eli's noise You smell that E-L-I-S-N-O-I-D-E.
