Ep 344: Richard Stanley

from The Movie Crypt · host ArieScope Pictures / FANGORIA Podcast Network

He's a mystery wrapped in an enigma and a living hero to every artist who's ever been trampled over by the system. Filmmaker Richard Stanley (HARDWARE, DUST DEVIL, THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU) sits down with Adam Green, Joe Lynch, and Arwen for a long awaited and fascinating discussion about his career journey. From seeing the original ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU in 1977 and determinedly deciding that he would one day tell H.G. Wells' fantastical story his own way... to making a name for himself with 1990's low-budget, post apocalyptic thriller HARDWARE… to watching his follow up DUST DEVIL fall out of his hands due to the bankruptcy of the production company and creative tampering of the final cut of the film (Stanley would go on to finance a restored version from the original negative many years later)… to ultimately getting the chance he dreamed of and writing/directing 1996's THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU – only to have the project become a legendary clusterfuck after creative disputes lead to him being fired just hours after the start of production (in order to understand the absolute nightmare Stanley endured you need to watch LOST SOUL - the 2014 documentary about the DR. MOREAU fiasco)… only to rise from the ashes over two decades later with this his new feature COLOR OUT OF SPACE… if Richard Stanley's unbreakable determination doesn't inspire you to stick to your guns than you need to turn your guns in immediately. Dr. Arwen provides "Hollywood Therapy" to a writer struggling to manage his expectations and Adam and Joe pray at the alter of their cinematic hero in this phenomenal conversation that starts off 2020 in spectacular fashion.
