Ep. 349 Doctrine & Covenants 98:9-33 The Hidden Cost of Anger

from My Scripture Streak

Summary In today's study session, we began with Mosiah 29 and the sobering reality that it is exceedingly difficult to dethrone an iniquitous king because such rulers surround themselves with guards, companions in sin, and laws crafted to protect their wickedness. This teaching tied directly into Doctrine and Covenants 98, which reminds us that when the wicked rule, the people mourn—but when righteous leaders are upheld, freedom and peace flourish. Jeff emphasized that our Constitution is a remarkable blessing, allowing for the peaceful transfer of power and granting each of us the civil responsibility to support good, honest, and wise leaders. From the Articles of Faith to modern apostles and prophets, the Lord calls us to sustain laws, obey rulers, and live by every word that proceedeth forth from His mouth. This requires patience, humility, and often repentance, as we learn line upon line and precept upon precept. The study also explored the Lord's counsel to respond to enemies with patience, not reviling nor seeking revenge. Through examples—including Jeff's own real-life stories of traffic frustrations—we saw how small choices toward patience invite peace, while anger only magnifies contention. (And just as a daily streak in patience or scripture study grows into a life of peace, the MyStreaks App can help you track and sustain these small, consistent actions that transform your discipleship.) Chapters Chapter 1: The Danger of Iniquitous Kings Mosiah 29:21–24 shows the entrenched power of wicked rulers. Why such leaders are nearly impossible to dethrone without bloodshed. The contrast between unrighteous rule and righteous law. Chapter 2: The Constitution and Civil Responsibility D&C 98 praises constitutional law as inspired of God. Peaceful transfer of power in the United States as a modern miracle. Our duty to vote and uphold leaders who protect religious freedom and righteousness. Chapter 3: Living by Every Word of God Scriptures, modern prophets, and local leaders as sources of divine law. Doctrine and Covenants 1:38: "Whether by mine own voice or the voice of my servants, it is the same." Learning to accept counsel even when style or delivery feels difficult. Chapter 4: Line Upon Line, Precept Upon Precept Growth in the gospel parallels mathematics: foundations must be laid before deeper laws are learned. The Lord's mercy in proving and strengthening us before giving more. The atonement of Christ makes continued progress possible. Chapter 5: Bearing Persecution and Finding Peace The Lord's law: bear patiently, revile not, and avoid revenge. Real-life illustrations: traffic conflicts, pride, and the lessons of humility. The promise: patience brings peace, revenge brings destruction. Conclusion The Lord's message is consistent: righteousness brings freedom, peace, and prosperity, while wickedness brings bondage and sorrow. We are called to uphold wise and honest leaders, to sustain the law, and to live by every word of God through scriptures, prophets, and personal revelation. Patience in adversity, whether facing iniquitous rulers or frustrating drivers, allows us to reflect Christ's light and prepares us to receive more of His law, line upon line. As disciples, we lay down our old life and take up His name, finding eternal life in the process. If you'd like to strengthen your consistency in scripture study, prayer, patience, or any gospel-centered action, the MyStreaks App is a simple, effective tool to help you build daily spiritual momentum. Each streak becomes a step toward the peace and freedom the Lord promises. So, let's keep living the law, sustaining good leaders, bearing patiently, and above all—keep streaking the scriptures.
